A veritable “weather bomb” is set to hit France. Storm Goretti is preparing to strike parts of the country starting this Thursday, January 8th, according to Météo-France, following earlier snowfall and severe cold. The meteorological service has placed several departments on orange alert and La Manche on red alert.

Rhône Under Yellow Alert for Strong Winds

The Rhône department will be under a yellow wind alert on Friday, January 9th, due to strong gusts of wind. We detail what to expect in the Rhône and Lyon in the coming hours.

Wind Gusts Up to 80 km/h Expected

For now, the yellow alert in the Rhône begins tonight and is in effect until 9 AM this Friday morning. Météo-France forecasts gusts of up to 80 km/h, and locally up to 110 km/h on the reliefs in the Rhône and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. In the Loire, the phenomenon is expected to be more dangerous, with peaks ranging from 100 to 110 km/h on the Monts du Forez and Pilat ridges.

Continued Wind on Friday and Saturday

Locally, in the west of the Rhône, winds up to 70 km/h are possible in the Monts du Lyonnais. In Lyon and its metropolitan area, winds are expected to be around 45 km/h overnight, according to Météo-France, with a more moderate situation. On Friday morning, winds are expected to be locally between 40 and 60 km/h across the Rhône. On Saturday afternoon, new gusts are announced in the west of the Rhône, potentially reaching 60 km/h.

Return of Snow on Sunday Evening

Météo-France also predicts new snowfall in the Rhône on Sunday evening. Overnight from Sunday to Monday, new snowfall is announced everywhere except Lyon and the extreme north of the Rhône.
