Traffic Update: Strong Winds East of Lyon and Congestion Persists

Lyon, January 27 – Drivers in the Lyon metropolitan area faced challenging conditions on Tuesday due to strong winds, an accident, and persistent congestion on several key routes. The morning commute saw significant slowdowns, with some areas experiencing delays of up to 22 minutes.

Strong Winds Affect Eastern Lyon

Strong winds were reported east of Lyon, particularly on the A46 between Saint-Priest and Ternay, and on the A7N from Chasse-sur-Rhône to Reventin-Vaugris. Motorists were advised to exercise caution in these areas.

Accident on the A89 Causes Delays

An accident involving two light vehicles occurred on the A89, heading towards Lyon, near Fleurieux-sur-l’Arbresle. This incident further contributed to traffic disruptions, prompting calls for increased vigilance from drivers.

Persistent Congestion Across the Network

Despite some easing of congestion, several bottlenecks remained throughout the morning. As of 10:01 AM, significant delays were still observed:

  • A47: 1.3 km of congestion at Ternay.
  • A450: 3.8 km of congestion from Saint-Genis-Laval to Pierre-Bénite.
  • A7: 3.1 km of congestion from Saint-Fons to Pierre-Bénite.
  • N346: 1 km of congestion at Saint-Priest, followed by 2.8 km from Décines-Charpieu to Chassieu.
  • A42: 4.4 km of congestion from Neyron to Villeurbanne.

Earlier in the morning, at 9:34 AM, the A43 experienced 5 km of congestion between Saint-Priest and the Lyon ring road, adding 10 minutes to travel times. At 9:26 AM, a total of 70 km of congestion was reported across the network, with specific areas affected:

  • South: 3.1 km on the A7 from Feyzin to Saint-Fons, and 1 km from Saint-Fons to Pierre-Bénite. 2 km on the A46 South at Mions. 3.8 km on the A450 towards Lyon from Saint-Genis-Laval to Pierre-Bénite. 1.3 km on the A47 towards Lyon at Ternay.
  • East: 6.6 km on the A43 from Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure to Bron. 1 km on the N346 at Saint-Priest, then 3 km from Décines-Charpieu to Chassieu.
  • North: 4.4 km on the A42 towards Lyon from Neyron to Villeurbanne across all lanes.
  • West: 2 km on the M6 towards Marseille near the Fourvière tunnel.

Givors Bridge Remains a Bottleneck

The A47 continued to experience slowdowns both upstream and downstream of the Givors bridge in the direction of Lyon, with a total of 3 kilometers of congestion reported at 9:13 AM.

High Congestion Index for Lyon

According to the TomTom index, the congestion rate in the Lyon metropolitan area reached 96% at 8:54 AM, which is 32% higher than the usual average. This translated to 85.5 km of traffic jams and an average speed of 17.6 km/h. On average, it took 15 minutes to travel 4.4 km.

Earlier Morning Traffic Intensified

As early as 8:38 AM, traffic became more complex. The usual disruptions were present on the A47, requiring about ten minutes to reach southern Lyon from Rive-de-Gier via the Givors bridge, and approximately twenty minutes via the A46 Lyon bypass. The Fourvière tunnel was heavily congested in both directions, and the M6 was particularly dense, with 15-20 minute delays when passing through Dardilly.

At 8:06 AM, nearly 45 kilometers of slowdowns were recorded:

  • South: 10 km on the A7 from Ternay to Saint-Fons, and 1 km from Saint-Fons to Pierre-Bénite. 3.8 km on the A450 towards Lyon from Saint-Genis-Laval to Pierre-Bénite.
  • East: 7 km on the A43 from Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure to Bron. 1 km on the N346 at Saint-Priest, then 2.8 km from Décines-Charpieu to Chassieu.
  • North: 2 km on the A42 towards Lyon from Neyron to Vaulx-en-Velin across all lanes. 10.2 km on the A46 North from Marennes to Rillieux-la-Pape.
  • West: 2 km on the M6 towards Marseille near the Fourvière tunnel.

At 7:51 AM, nearly 10 km of congestion was present on the A46 South towards Lyon between Marennes and Saint-Priest, adding 22 minutes to travel times from the A432 junction to the ring road. The M6 and M7 also experienced slowdowns, with works near Pierre-Bénite affecting the M7. The eastern entrance to the ring road, specifically the last three kilometers of the A43 between Bron and the Lyon ring road, was also congested, adding four minutes to usual travel times. The A46 eastbound towards Paris also began to experience congestion between Mions and Saint-Priest, though this was considered normal for a weekday morning.
