LYON, January 28 – The football world is in mourning following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of at least seven Greek supporters en route to Lyon for a match between Olympique Lyonnais (OL) and PAOK. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, has led to an outpouring of tributes, though UEFA has ruled out postponing the game.
Tragic Accident Claims Seven Lives
The fatal accident took place on Tuesday afternoon in Romania, near the Serbian border. A van carrying PAOK supporters collided head-on with a truck, resulting in seven fatalities and several injuries, with at least two individuals reported to be in critical condition, according to local media. All victims were fans of the Greek team, traveling to attend the match scheduled for Thursday at 9:00 PM at Groupama Stadium.
The violent collision was captured by a dashcam from another vehicle and quickly circulated online. Footage revealed that the van veered out of its lane, striking an oncoming truck, likely during an overtaking maneuver. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of this devastating incident, which has deeply impacted the football communities in Greece and Lyon, where the deceased supporters were expected.
Visitor Section to Remain Empty
In the wake of this tragedy, PAOK supporters have collectively decided not to attend the match, prioritizing mourning over the game. Approximately 3,000 fans were anticipated in the visitor section of Groupama Stadium, but these seats will now remain empty.
“Sharing the sadness and pain of the entire PAOK family after the tragic accident, and following the decision of organized supporters to cancel all their trips and keep the visitor stands closed as a sign of mourning, and in consultation with the French and Lyonnaise authorities, this particular stand will remain closed,” PAOK announced on X (formerly Twitter).
UEFA Refuses Postponement, Tributes Planned
PAOK Salonika had requested a postponement of the match. However, Greek press reports indicate that UEFA declined the request, primarily because it is the final day of the league phase, with 18 matches scheduled to be played simultaneously.
Olympique Lyonnais has issued a message acknowledging the seven deceased supporters and has promised a tribute during the match. Supporters’ groups are also expected to convey messages of condolence and support. OL fans have also recalled a similar tragedy in April 2005, when two of their own supporters, Jean-Yves and Matthias, died in a road accident while traveling to a match in Nantes.
The incident underscores the deep emotional connection between fans and their clubs, and the profound impact that such tragedies have on the wider football community.
