Lyon, February 6, 2026 – The Servient family home, inaugurated yesterday at 44 rue Servient in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement, offers 21 permanent housing units. This initiative, led by the Métropole de Lyon, GrandLyon Habitat, and Habitat et Humanisme Rhône, aims to provide sustainable housing solutions with daily support for individuals in situations of extreme exclusion.
A Project Integrated into the Metropolitan Sustainable Housing Strategy
The opening of the Servient family home aligns with the metropolitan policy of deploying permanent accommodation solutions for individuals marginalized from conventional housing. Unlike emergency shelters, this system emphasizes stability, with no time limit, allowing residents to build more secure life paths.
As of January 1, 2026, the Métropole de Lyon and the Rhône region had 841 places in family homes, underscoring the importance of this initiative in combating residential exclusion.
Reconversion of a Former School Site in the City Center
The project involved the complete transformation of a former school building, made available by the Métropole through an emphyteutic lease. GrandLyon Habitat undertook extensive heritage rehabilitation, including an elevation at the corner of rue Servient and rue Corneille.
This operation optimizes land use in the city center without consuming additional space. The building, now with four floors, houses:
- 18 T1-type apartments
- 3 T1 bis-type apartments
- 80 m² of communal areas (common kitchen, living room, laundry room)
The complex opens onto a green inner courtyard, fostering conviviality and interaction among residents.
An Investment of Nearly 2.8 Million Euros
The total cost of the operation amounted to 2,775,579 €. Its financing relied on the mobilization of several public and private partners:
- GrandLyon Habitat: 614,552 € in own funds
- State: 270,000 € in housing aid granted in 2021
- Métropole de Lyon: 231,000 €, plus 50,000 € for the elevation
- City of Lyon: 21,000 € in basic subsidy and 100,000 € in exceptional aid
- Entreprise des Possibles: 56,000 € for equipment
This financial arrangement reflects the joint involvement of social housing actors and local authorities.
Social Support at the Heart of the System
Daily management is provided by the Habitat et Humanisme Rhône association. It relies on the presence of a house host and a multidisciplinary team responsible for supporting residents.
This human component is financed by the State through a daily allowance of 19.50 € per place, representing an annual budget of 149,467.50 €.
This system aims to ensure permanent social monitoring, promote the autonomy of the residents, and support their integration into neighborhood life.
A Tool for Stabilizing Residential Pathways
By offering private accommodation combined with communal spaces, the Servient family home contributes to the reconstruction of social ties and the securing of pathways for long-term vulnerable individuals.
For the project partners, this achievement illustrates the capacity of the Lyon area to combine social policies, urban planning, and heritage rehabilitation, serving an adapted housing offer to contemporary challenges.
