Lyon, February 25 – Raoul bakery, located in the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon, has been forced to close its doors immediately following a surprise inspection that revealed appalling hygiene conditions. The prefecture issued an urgent closure order after inspectors found numerous serious violations, posing a significant health risk to customers.
Urgent Closure: A Threat to Public Health
The inspection, conducted on February 20 at the bakery located at 73 cours Dr Long in the Montchat district, uncovered a series of alarming issues. An agent from the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP) documented several critical deficiencies:
- The presence of at least one mouse carcass.
- A pronounced lack of maintenance and cleaning in the production and storage areas.
- Failure to comply with proper food storage temperatures.
- Absence of traceability for food products and lack of information regarding defrosted items.
- No hygienic facilities for hand washing and drying in the kitchen.
The Rhône prefecture stated that “the continuation of activity, under the observed conditions, constitutes a significant threat to consumer health due to the high probability of contamination and the risks of intoxication.”
Required Corrections for Reopening
For the bakery to be allowed to reopen, it must implement extensive corrective measures. These include “filling holes in the walls and ceiling” and “displaying the mention ‘defrosted product’ for affected items offered for sale.” A DDPP agent will conduct a follow-up inspection to verify that all necessary changes have been made.
Until these conditions are met, the closure order signed by the prefecture remains posted on the bakery’s storefront. This incident marks another instance of a business in Lyon being penalized for neglecting hygiene standards.
This situation highlights the ongoing vigilance of local authorities in ensuring food safety and public health within the city’s commercial establishments. The DDPP regularly conducts such inspections to protect consumers from potential health hazards.
Local residents and passersby have noted the closure order displayed prominently on the bakery’s facade, raising awareness within the community about the importance of strict hygiene practices in food preparation and sales.
The bakery’s management has not yet issued a public statement regarding the closure or the steps they intend to take to rectify the issues. The focus now remains on the necessary improvements to meet health and safety regulations, ensuring that any future reopening prioritizes consumer well-being.
