Paris, March 4 – The first repatriation flight for French citizens stranded in the Middle East arrived at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris in the early hours of Wednesday, March 4th. The Air France flight, chartered from Muscat, Oman, landed just before 3:00 AM, bringing relief to dozens of French nationals.
Many Vulnerable Passengers on Board
The flight carried a diverse group of passengers, including “many families, young children, pregnant women, and a summer camp group,” according to Minister Éléonore Caroit. The majority of these passengers had been in Dubai. Approximately one hundred seats were reserved by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs for the most “vulnerable” individuals.
Minister Caroit, the Minister Delegate for Francophonie, International Partnerships, and French Nationals Abroad, stated, “The idea is to multiply this type of arrangement so that the largest possible number of French people can return safely.”
Middle East Conflict Causes Flight Cancellations
The repatriation effort comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East following an Israeli-American attack on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by the Islamic Republic against Gulf monarchies and Israel. These events have led to the closure of airspace in numerous countries, resulting in the cancellation of 19,000 flights in just four days, according to specialized data provider Cirium.
An estimated 400,000 French nationals are present in the fifteen countries affected by the conflict. While more are contacting consular authorities, not all wish to return to France, the Minister Delegate clarified.
Ongoing Efforts to Repatriate Citizens
The arrival of this first flight marks a significant step in the French government’s efforts to ensure the safety and return of its citizens from the conflict-ridden region. Further similar operations are expected to be organized to assist those still abroad.
This situation highlights the broader impact of the Middle East conflict on international travel and the challenges faced by governments in ensuring the well-being of their citizens in crisis zones.
The French government continues to monitor the situation closely and is working to provide assistance to all French nationals affected by the ongoing events in the Middle East.
