Paris, April 29 – The Blitz Society, a pioneer in chess-themed bars, has unveiled a new establishment in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Located at 58 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, just steps from the Louvre, this new venue aims to extend the chess experience into the early hours for enthusiasts. The opening took place this Wednesday, April 29.
A Strategic Expansion for Chess Enthusiasts
Following the success of its first bar in Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th arrondissement), the founders of Blitz Society have launched a second address. This new location will operate from Wednesday to Sunday, between 6 PM and 2 AM, providing a late-night option for chess players. The bar is designed as a ‘hidden bar’ or speakeasy, situated on the upper floor of the Pizi pizzeria.
Romain Benhamou, one of the co-founders, highlighted the strategic importance of this new location. “Some of our clients came from afar, and the first location isn’t very big,” he explained. The new venue, which can accommodate up to fifty people, is expected to foster more shared moments among visitors, including a significant number of tourists who frequent the Blitz Society.
More Than Just a Chess Club
Designed by Katz Architecture Studio, the new Blitz Society features a sophisticated ambiance with brushed stainless steel, vintage lighting, and leopard-print carpeting. Romain Benhamou emphasized that it is “not a chess club,” but rather “a living space where everyone can come, all levels, all ages…” whether alone or accompanied.
The venue at 58 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau is conceived as a physical meeting place to extend the enjoyment of online interactions related to chess, a discipline that has seen a resurgence in popularity, partly due to social media.
Patrons can enjoy pizza between games and listen to a diverse musical program curated by DJ Gregory, featuring tracks from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, ensuring an inclusive atmosphere.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Chess in Paris
The expansion of Blitz Society reflects a growing demand for social spaces where people can engage in intellectual games like chess. The extended hours of the new location cater to a broader audience, including those who prefer late-night activities.
This initiative contributes to the cultural vibrancy of Paris, offering both locals and tourists a unique entertainment option that combines strategic thinking with a relaxed social environment. The founders’ vision is to create a welcoming space that transcends the traditional image of a chess club, making the game accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The success of the first Blitz Society bar and the anticipation surrounding the new opening underscore the enduring appeal of chess and the innovative approaches being taken to introduce it to new audiences.
