Yzeron, Rhône – The millennial Châteauvieux Chapel, often described as a “jewel” of the Monts du Lyonnais, is facing an existential threat. Located about an hour from Lyon, this historic edifice, built around the year 1000, has been in “grave danger” since June 2025 due to severe water infiltration, which has compromised its structure.
An Indispensable Restoration for a Cherished Landmark
The chapel, situated in Châteauvieux, continues to be a consecrated site, hosting masses, concerts, guided tours, and local events. It also offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Alps, attracting numerous visitors, hikers, and worshippers annually. However, its roof and framework are severely weakened, and cracks threaten the stability of its masonry, making a complete restoration “indispensable” to preserve it. The building is officially listed as a historical monument.
The municipality of Yzeron and the “Amis de la chapelle” association are working in conjunction with the Fondation du Patrimoine (Heritage Foundation) to raise the necessary funds for its salvation.
Significant Funding Gap Remains
Restoration work, primarily focused on securing the structure by addressing the roof and framework, commenced in 2025. The total estimated cost for these critical repairs is €423,474. While €33,380 has already been collected, there remains a substantial deficit of €70,000 to fully finance the project.
The Fondation du Patrimoine emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating, “Every donation, small or large, will help save this emblematic place and keep alive the memory of a territory rich in its history and traditions.” Donations can be made through the dedicated page on the Fondation du Patrimoine website.
