Oxygène Train Deliveries for Paris-Clermont Line Delayed to Mid-2027
Clermont-Ferrand, May 22 – The delivery of the new Oxygène trains for the Paris-Clermont line has been delayed, with Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announcing that they are now expected by the end of the first half of 2027. This marks a shift from the initially planned March 2027 delivery. The minister made the announcement during a visit to Clermont-Ferrand this Friday, May 22, where he participated in a two-hour meeting at the prefecture.
The Paris-Clermont line has been a subject of ongoing debate due to frequent delays and the aging condition of its current rolling stock. The introduction of the Oxygène trains is seen as a crucial step towards modernizing the service and improving passenger experience.
Significant Investment to Improve Line Reliability
In addition to the revised delivery schedule, Minister Tabarot also revealed a substantial investment of 450 million euros for the line between 2028 and 2031. This funding aims to enhance maintenance of the trains, improve level crossings, and install fences along the tracks to prevent incidents caused by external factors such as animals or objects on the railway.
The primary objective of these investments is to enhance the overall reliability and efficiency of the Paris-Clermont line. “The goal is to save time,” explained Minister Tabarot. “But I will not sell dreams. Some still have the idea of a high-speed line, we cannot go back. If there are no more delays, and we have more reliability, it will be obvious progress, with improved travel conditions.”
Addressing Current Challenges and Future Prospects
The Paris-Clermont line serves approximately two million travelers annually. A significant portion of current delays, around 20%, are attributed to issues with the existing rolling stock. The new Oxygène trains are expected to alleviate these problems and contribute to a more punctual and comfortable journey for passengers.
Initial empty tests of the new trains are scheduled to commence as early as this summer, providing an early assessment of their performance and integration into the existing infrastructure. The minister’s visit and the announced investments underscore the government’s commitment to improving regional rail services and addressing the long-standing concerns of commuters on this vital route.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with some stakeholders expressing disappointment over the delay but acknowledging the necessity of the investments for long-term improvements. The focus now shifts to the successful implementation of the investment plan and the timely delivery of the Oxygène trains to bring about the much-needed positive changes for the Paris-Clermont line.
