Paris, June 8 – A significant fire broke out early this Monday morning on Rue d’Aboukir in the Sentier district of Paris’s 2nd arrondissement. The incident, which occurred in a six-story building with a ground-floor commercial unit and residential apartments above, prompted a large-scale response from the Paris Fire Brigade.
Extensive Mobilization and Rescues
The alarm was raised around 7:30 AM, with residents contacting emergency services. Firefighters arrived swiftly at 98, Rue d’Aboukir. According to the Paris Fire Brigade, approximately 100 firefighters were mobilized, deploying three fire hoses to combat the blaze.
Five individuals were rescued from the building, all suffering from minor injuries. Four of them, affected by smoke inhalation, were transported to hospitals, while one person was treated on site. Additionally, four people were rescued using ladders, highlighting the severity and complexity of the operation.
Significant Damage to Lower Floors
The fire primarily affected the ground floor and the first floor of the building. Firefighters reported that these two levels were completely destroyed. The presence of numerous fabrics stored on these floors contributed to the rapid spread and intensity of the fire due to their high calorific value.
A spokesperson for the Paris Fire Brigade stated, “The situation is not favorable due to the significant amount of flammable materials. The ground floor and first floor have been totally destroyed.” Additional resources, including an urban search and rescue group, were requested to assist with the ongoing operation.
Fire Under Control, Investigation Underway
As of 9:50 AM, the fire was reported to be under control but not yet fully extinguished. Firefighters were continuing their efforts to ensure the complete suppression of the blaze and to secure the premises.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities will conduct a thorough examination of the scene once the area is fully safe. The incident underscores the challenges faced by emergency services in densely populated urban areas with older buildings and varied commercial and residential uses.
