Lyon, July 13th – Faced with a noticeable downturn in business, merchants, restaurateurs, hoteliers, and artisans in the historic Vieux Lyon district are presenting a united front. Operating under the ‘So Vieux Lyon’ association, these professionals aim to highlight the challenges they face while also proposing a collective strategy to bolster the area’s appeal. Their initiatives and projects will be presented to elected officials and Lyon’s economic stakeholders on July 16th, during the ‘Estivales du Vieux Lyon’.
An Emblematic District Confronted with a Sharp Decline in Activity
Vieux Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains one of the metropolis’s primary tourist attractions. Beyond its picturesque image, the district boasts a dense network of independent shops, artisans, restaurants, hotels, galleries, and businesses that contribute to its economic vitality.
However, an early July 2026 survey conducted by the ‘So Vieux Lyon’ association among its members revealed that over 70% of the surveyed professionals reported a significant drop in their turnover. Merchants specifically cited difficulties in accessing the district, parking costs, evolving consumer habits, reduced purchasing power, heatwaves, and issues of insalubrity. This combination of factors is weakening businesses heavily reliant on both tourist and local foot traffic.
‘So Vieux Lyon’ Aims for a Collective Strategy
Established to unite the district’s economic players, the ‘So Vieux Lyon’ association intends to move beyond mere observation. During a press conference scheduled for July 16th at the Gadagne Museum, the association will present a review of its actions undertaken in 2025 and 2026, alongside several projects designed to enhance the district’s attractiveness and better promote its businesses.
Among the initiatives already launched are a multilingual website, the publication of a guide to local addresses, the organization of year-round events, and the creation of an ethical charter to promote responsible and quality commerce. The association, chaired by Carine Chollat, also seeks to strengthen dialogue with local authorities to advocate for the interests of professionals and to make Vieux Lyon an appealing district not only for tourists but also for the residents of the metropolis.
Key Initiatives by ‘So Vieux Lyon’:
- Launch of a multilingual website
- Publication of a guide to local addresses
- Organization of year-round events
- Creation of an ethical charter for responsible commerce
- Strengthening dialogue with local authorities
The association believes that by working together, they can overcome the current challenges and ensure the long-term prosperity of Vieux Lyon.
