Why So France began in 2022 when Sophie Laurent found herself explaining for the hundredth time why French people don’t put butter on their bread at restaurants (because the bread is already perfect, obviously). After years of fielding questions from her British family and international friends, she started a simple blog to answer the “why” questions about France that guidebooks never covered.
Mission: To celebrate French culture while acknowledging its quirks, helping readers understand not just what the French do, but why they do it.
Values: Authenticity over stereotypes, humor with respect, practical help with cultural insight, building bridges between cultures through understanding and appreciation.

Born in Lyon to a French mother and British father, Sophie spent her childhood navigating between fish & chips and foie gras. After studying journalism at the Sorbonne and working as a food critic in Paris, she now splits her time between a Marais apartment and a cottage in Provence.
