Sixteen Individuals Detained in Paris Periscolaire Scandal
Paris, May 22 – Sixteen people have been taken into police custody in Paris this week by the Child Protection Brigade (BPM) in connection with a widening scandal involving alleged inappropriate behavior and sexual violence against children in after-school programs. The arrests, which took place on Wednesday, May 20, target individuals working or having worked in schools within the 7th arrondissement.
The detentions follow a series of investigations launched by the Paris public prosecutor’s office, as announced by Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau on Sunday, May 17. These investigations concern potential abuses in a total of 84 nursery schools, around twenty elementary schools, and ten crèches across the capital.
Details of the Arrests and Suspects
The 16 individuals placed in custody are involved in after-school activities for the Saint-Dominique, Rapp, and La Rochefoucauld schools. Among them are three Specialized School Agents for Nursery Schools (ASEM), three City Educational Managers (REV) working in leisure centers, and ten animators, all contract workers. The suspects range in age from 18 to 68, born between January 1958 and October 2007. A police source indicated that the group includes a near-equal number of men and women, possibly even more women.
Eleven of the individuals were arrested at their homes, while five were summoned for questioning. Investigators are currently examining their phones and computer equipment for further evidence.
Allegations and the Role of Media Investigations
The Paris public prosecutor’s office stated that the investigations were initiated following complaints detailing various types and levels of severity of alleged acts. These include allegations of rape, sexual assault, sexual exhibition, and other gestures or behaviors described as excessive or constituting violence.
A significant number of these complaints emerged after the broadcast of the “Cash Investigation” program on January 29, 2026. This program, which involved several months of immersion, revealed incidents that had not previously been brought to the attention of investigators. The broadcast prompted numerous questions from parents and highlighted concerns about the safety of children in after-school settings.
Collective SOS Périscolaire Reacts
The collective SOS Périscolaire issued a statement on Wednesday evening, expressing cautious optimism regarding the arrests. “We note that things are finally starting to move forward. We want to believe that justice will shed full light on these facts and establish responsibilities,” the collective stated. They added, “We are relieved to see that the investigation is progressing and that concrete measures are being taken. We will consult with our lawyers and await the outcome of the custodies by the end of the week before commenting further.”
Despite this progress, the collective remains deeply concerned about the low number of such cases that ultimately lead to convictions. They also deplored the continued lack of information from institutions, which leaves families in uncertainty and distress.
Ongoing Investigations and Next Steps
On Wednesday evening, the Paris public prosecutor’s office ordered the extension of the custody for all 16 suspects. Interrogations continued throughout Thursday. Several of the individuals suspected of the aforementioned offenses may be brought before a judge on Friday, May 22. As of 7:30 PM on Thursday, the Paris public prosecutor’s office had not released any further communications.
This scandal has sent shockwaves through the after-school community in Paris, following previous revelations and a recent request for an 18-month prison sentence against an animator in the 11th arrondissement on May 5. The full extent of the allegations and the potential impact on childcare services across the city remain a subject of intense public and judicial scrutiny.
