Algerian Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud to Visit Paris in Coming Days

Paris, May 17 – Algerian Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud is scheduled to visit Paris in “a few days,” signaling a further warming of relations between Algeria and France. This development was announced by French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez in an interview with “La Tribune Dimanche.”

“I will welcome my Algerian counterpart here in a few days. This is a very positive signal. Security cooperation is gradually being re-established,” stated Laurent Nuñez, who had previously visited Algiers in mid-February at Sayoud’s invitation, following months of strained relations between the two countries.

Renewed Security Cooperation and Information Exchange

Nuñez’s visit to Algiers initiated a significant détente in Franco-Algerian relations. Another key step in this rapprochement is the anticipated visit of French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin to Algiers on Monday. Darmanin aims to “re-establish judicial relations” between the two nations and address the case of journalist Christophe Gleizes, who is currently detained in Algeria.

The French Interior Minister emphasized the importance of renewed collaboration, stating that there is “a work of information exchange to re-engage on drug traffickers, and collaboration is working in both directions” with his Algerian counterpart.

Diplomatic Necessity Over Confrontation

When questioned about the “power struggle” with Algeria, a stance advocated by his predecessor Bruno Retailleau, Nuñez responded, “On the security and migratory side, we are obliged to discuss with Algeria.” He elaborated, “It is a great country, which has a certain know-how in terms of intelligence and security. Having exchanges with it is necessary.”

Nuñez highlighted the profound impact of Franco-Algerian relations, noting that “several million people on both sides of the Mediterranean are concerned by the Franco-Algerian relationship and live it very directly.” He asserted, “What is the point of having a power struggle under these conditions?” In his view, “those who only seek to confront Algeria are not thinking about the interests of France, but about their electoral interests.”

Journalist’s Case Remains Delicate

Regarding the possibility of journalist Christophe Gleizes’ release before the Football World Cup, Nuñez remained cautious. “I don’t know and don’t want to talk about it. We keep hope,” he stated.

The upcoming visit of Minister Sayoud underscores a concerted effort by both nations to rebuild trust and foster closer cooperation across various sectors, particularly in security and justice.
