Paris, April 29, 2026 – Denfert-Rochereau Square, a major crossroads in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, is currently undergoing significant renovation work. The project aims to transform the 4-hectare square into a more verdant, pedestrian-friendly, and pleasant urban space, with completion expected in early 2027.
A Greener and More Accessible Square for Parisians
In response to climate change, the City of Paris is committed to increasing green spaces and improving urban living conditions. The renovation of Denfert-Rochereau Square is a key part of this initiative, prioritizing pedestrians and sustainable mobility over vehicular traffic. The project includes:
- 800 meters of new cycle paths to enhance cycling infrastructure.
- New pedestrian areas in the center of the square, extending pedestrian-dedicated spaces by 4390m².
- Extensive planting, with no less than 107 new trees and 30,000 plants, adding 3100m² of green space.
- New bus lanes and improved accessibility for all bus stops.
These improvements are designed to create a cooler environment, preserve biodiversity, and connect the green corridor between the Luxembourg Garden and the Cité internationale universitaire.
Current Phase of Construction and Anticipated Completion
As of May 4, 2026, a new phase of construction has commenced, leading to the closure of the square’s center to traffic. Additionally, the Jacques-Antoine Square and the Abbé-Migne Square are temporarily closed to the public. Residents are advised that the full completion of the works is not expected until early 2027.
The City of Paris stated that these extensive works will ultimately:
- Create a cool island and a space for biodiversity preservation.
- Establish a convivial living space in the heart of the 14th arrondissement.
- Accommodate new uses within an area protected from car traffic.
- Reorganize traffic to improve fluidity and reduce noise pollution.
- Rebalance public space in favor of pedestrians and soft mobility.
- Highlight the architectural and vegetal heritage of the square.
The two pavilions housing the Catacombs and Liberation Museum, along with the surrounding squares, will be connected to form a large central island, ideal for strolling. Pedestrians will benefit from a protected area below the famous Lion of Belfort statue. Furthermore, the Georges-Lamarque Square will feature a playful park for children, the developed square on Boulevard Saint-Jacques will offer a dog park, and the Jacques-Antoine Square will become a garden-square.
Impact on Local Landmarks and Future Plans
Located near the Catacombs and the Liberation Museum, Denfert-Rochereau Square welcomes thousands of visitors annually, who are greeted by the iconic Lion of Belfort sculpture by Auguste Bartholdi. The renovations aim to further enhance the appeal of these cultural sites by creating a more inviting and accessible environment.
The project underscores Paris’s ongoing commitment to sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life for its residents and visitors. The transformation of Denfert-Rochereau Square is a significant step towards a greener, more pedestrian-friendly Paris.
