Lyon, March 18, 2026 – In a pioneering initiative at the intersection of circular economy and social impact, ESMOD Lyon, a renowned fashion school, and Le Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri, a social integration organization, have launched “Sortie d’atelier.” This project features a capsule collection of upcycled jeans designed by students, with the dual objective of experimenting with circular fashion and supporting professional integration in the Lyon metropolitan area.
700 Jeans Recycled for a Capsule Collection
The project is built upon a substantial resource: 700 pairs of jeans collected and sorted by Le Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri, originally destined for recycling. These materials were entrusted to ESMOD Lyon students to envision a capsule collection comprising four unisex, adjustable, and patchwork-style pieces. Over ten days, multiple teams focused on textile design and prototyping. The selected collection stands out for its aesthetic coherence and its ability to highlight reuse. It was first presented in early March at the Marché de la Mode Vintage, serving as a real-world test with the public.
Beyond the design aspect, the students also developed the entire project identity, including its communication strategy. This approach bridges academic training with operational reality, providing students with practical experience in a socially conscious context.
A Crossroad of Circular Economy and Integration
This initiative aligns with a local circular economy model. The jeans were donated within the Lyon metropolitan area, sorted by individuals in professional integration programs, and then transformed into new, higher-value products. The production of these pieces will be handled by the Foyer’s sewing workshop. This setup serves as a vital lever for professional integration, enabling individuals distant from employment to develop technical skills while receiving support in their career paths.
The upcycled garments are scheduled to be sold starting mid-April at the Passage Thiaffait thrift store. All proceeds from these sales will be donated to Le Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri, thereby strengthening its economic model, which relies partly on textile reuse.
A Showcase for Responsible Fashion in Lyon
The collection will gain strategic visibility at Printemps Lyon from April 13 to May 2, 2026. This exhibition in a major downtown department store aims to raise broader public awareness about sustainable fashion, while simultaneously promoting the work of both the students and the Foyer’s teams. Additionally, a fashion show is planned for April 25 at Passage Thiaffait, an iconic venue for independent creation in Lyon. This event will bring together designers, social actors, and the public around a project deeply rooted in the local community.
A Signal for Fashion and Training Stakeholders
With “Sortie d’atelier,” ESMOD Lyon and Le Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri exemplify an evolving trend in the fashion industry. Faced with environmental and social challenges, hybrid models are proliferating, combining training, production, and local impact. For businesses in the sector, this type of initiative opens up concrete prospects, including access to new materials from reuse, experimentation with short supply chains, and the integration of social dimensions into the value chain. These are all levers that are gradually redefining production standards.
At the Lyon scale, the project also confirms the structuring of an ecosystem around responsible fashion, capable of fostering dialogue among schools, social actors, and distribution channels. This collaborative effort underscores Lyon’s commitment to sustainable practices and social responsibility within the fashion industry.
