Lyon, March 30 – The French Armed Forces are preparing to occupy Westfield La Part-Dieu, a prominent shopping center in Lyon, for a two-day event aimed at public engagement, career promotion, and recruitment. The initiative, scheduled for April 3 and 4, 2026, seeks to bridge the gap between military life and the general public, particularly targeting younger generations.

An Unprecedented Immersion in the Heart of the City

For two days, the bustling shopping center will transform into an interactive exploration ground for the French military. Visitors will encounter a flight simulator, a submarine model, and various field equipment, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers, airmen, and sailors. Representatives from diverse units, including the 19th Engineer Regiment, mountain infantry, aeronautical specialists, and submarine forces, will be on hand to engage directly with the public, dispelling common misconceptions about military careers.

Jean-Philippe Pelou-Daniel, the center’s director, emphasized the unique nature of the event. “Our objective is to be a link between our visitors and the men and women of the armed forces,” he stated. “Crossing paths with an Alphajet while doing your shopping is not an everyday occurrence!”

Recruitment Drive Amidst Retail Aisles

Beyond the spectacle, a primary goal of the event is recruitment. In a climate of increasing demand for personnel, the armed forces are stepping out of their traditional bases to connect with potential candidates directly. On the third floor of the center, dedicated orientation and job-dating spaces will facilitate concrete discussions about career paths, training programs, and engagement opportunities. This approach aims to make military careers more accessible and understandable to a broader audience.

By choosing Westfield La Part-Dieu, an iconic and highly frequented location, the armed forces are adopting a new strategy: reaching out to where French citizens live, shop, and circulate. The official inauguration is set for Friday, April 3, at 11:00 AM, an event that may mark the beginning of a new commitment for some attendees.

Practical Information:

  • Location: Westfield La Part-Dieu, central square and all center spaces
  • Dates: April 3 to April 4, 2026
  • Time: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Admission: Free

This initiative follows a trend of innovative public engagement efforts by the armed forces, aiming to foster a stronger connection with the civilian population and highlight the diverse opportunities available within military service.
