Gang Leader Found Burned in Lyon: Abduction and Murder Investigation Launched

Lyon, France – March 5, 2026 – The burned body of a man believed to be a leader of the “Jefe Mafia” gang has been discovered near Lyon, following a violent abduction on the A7 motorway. An investigation for murder by an organized gang has been opened.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, March 2, began with a car accident on the A7 motorway near Lyon. A passenger from one of the vehicles, later identified as the victim, attempted a desperate escape by jumping six meters down, crossing traffic lanes. His pursuers, in a grey Audi, followed. An off-duty nurse who stopped to assist the injured man was also assaulted, and both were forced into the trunk of the attackers’ vehicle.

Discovery of the Body and Claim of Responsibility

On Tuesday morning, March 3, less than 10 kilometers from the abduction site, a burned body was found alongside a railway line. Authorities believe it is the man who was kidnapped hours earlier. An anonymous email sent to the editorial staff of Lyon Mag claimed responsibility for the execution, stating: “Two bullets in the head in Villeurbanne. The sole leader and creator of the Jefe Mafia was executed an hour before the round of fasting.” The email was accompanied by videos showing the body about to be set on fire, a tactic seemingly designed to instill fear.

Alexis André, editorial director of Lyon Mag, commented on the disturbing nature of the incident: “The images we saw, which resemble a scene that one would rather see in Mexico, or at least in a country where delinquency would be overdeveloped, can happen in the Lyon metropolitan area.”

Dispute Over Lyon Drug Trafficking Control

The victim, known to authorities for drug-related offenses, has been identified as a member of the Jefe Mafia, a drug trafficking group that has recently emerged in Lyon. The gang has been involved in criminal acts, including arson attacks on homes and shootings, as it clashes with rival groups for control of drug distribution points in the city.

Sébastien Gendraud, deputy departmental secretary of the UN1TÉ Police union, explained the context: “The financial stakes being very high, there are already drug traffickers who are established in the Lyon region, and there are attempts at intrusion to regain market share, particularly by the DZ Mafia from Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), which regularly leads to settling of scores.”

The victim was reportedly aware of the threats against him and had left his home, spending the previous night in a hotel in Lyon’s Perrache district.

Ongoing Investigation

An investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and murder on the A7 motorway. Police are working to determine the exact circumstances of the crime and to identify the perpetrators.

The incident highlights the escalating violence associated with drug trafficking in the Lyon area, with gangs employing increasingly brutal tactics in their struggle for control.
