Paris, March 14 – The French capital is buzzing with the upcoming inaugural Gospel Fashion Week, scheduled for this Saturday, March 14, at the MLK Church in Créteil. This event highlights the growing intersection of faith and fashion, bringing together numerous Christian creators.

Gospel Fashion Week: A New Platform for Christian Designers

The first edition of the Gospel Fashion Week will take place at the MLK Church in Créteil, where approximately 25 Christian designers specializing in fashion, jewelry, and accessories will showcase and sell their creations. The event is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Seven Rooftop, offering a unique platform for faith-inspired artistry in the heart of Paris.

This initiative marks a significant moment for Christian artists and entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, providing them with an opportunity to reach a broader audience and celebrate their faith through design. The event is expected to draw a diverse crowd interested in both contemporary fashion and spiritual expression.

Anglican Church Faces Deep Divisions

Concurrently, the global Anglican Communion is grappling with profound internal divisions. On March 5, in Abuja, Nigeria, the Global Anglican Future Conference (Gafcon), which comprises conservative Anglican churches primarily from Africa and Asia, announced the creation of a World Anglican Council. This new body is poised to challenge the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Archbishop Laurent Mbanda of Rwanda has been elected as the president of this newly formed structure. Gafcon explicitly stated that its president “will not be a primus inter pares” (first among equals), a title traditionally reserved for the Archbishop of Canterbury. This move effectively positions the new council as a rival to the current Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, who is the first woman to hold the position and is considered by conservatives to be too progressive. Her official installation is slated for March 25.

The establishment of the World Anglican Council underscores the deep theological and social rifts within the Anglican Communion, particularly concerning issues of LGBTQ+ rights and the ordination of women. This development signals a potential schism, with conservative factions seeking to establish an independent authority that aligns more closely with their traditional interpretations of Christian doctrine.

Investigation into Assisted Suicide Attempt in Paris

In other news from Paris, a woman in her sixties was taken into police custody in late February on suspicion of attempting to assist her 85-year-old mother in committing suicide by administering a lethal substance. The Paris public prosecutor’s office confirmed this information to France Inter on March 8, following a report by Le Parisien.

An investigation has been launched into “criminal conspiracy with intent to poison” and “acquisition and possession of a poisonous or psychotropic substance.” This incident highlights the ongoing complex and sensitive debate surrounding end-of-life care and assisted suicide in France, a topic that has seen increasing public discussion and parliamentary consideration.

These events reflect a week of diverse happenings in Paris, ranging from cultural innovations in fashion to significant religious and social issues, all contributing to the dynamic tapestry of the city’s current affairs.
