In the early hours of Sunday, April 12, police and gendarmerie forces jointly intervened at an unauthorized rave party in the La Mouche industrial zone of Saint-Genis-Laval, located south of Lyon. The event, which gathered around 300 participants, escalated into hostile confrontations with law enforcement.
Clashes Erupt as Police Face Mortar Fire
Upon arrival at the scene around midnight, police and gendarmerie were met with significant hostility from the attendees. According to the Rhône prefecture, officers were targeted with fireworks mortars and projectiles. In response, after issuing regulatory warnings, dispersion methods were employed to control the crowd.
Seven individuals were arrested during the intervention and taken into police custody. Authorities have stated that legal proceedings will be initiated against the organizers of the event and those responsible for the violence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the law enforcement personnel.
Illegal Gatherings Prohibited in Neighboring Department
The incident occurred shortly after the prefect of Isère, a neighboring department, issued an order prohibiting rave parties, teknivals, and other free parties throughout the weekend. This measure was implemented following intelligence regarding potential illegal gatherings being circulated on social media. It is speculated that this prohibition might have led to the displacement of such events to the Rhône department.
Intervention Limits Scope of Gathering, Further Infractions Noted
The timely intervention by law enforcement helped to delay the full establishment of the party and limited its overall scale. While approximately 300 revelers were initially present on Sunday morning, their numbers dwindled to between 100 and 200 by midday.
A security cordon was maintained around the site throughout Sunday to prevent new arrivals and to control individuals leaving the gathering. By Sunday evening, the remaining participants had vacated the premises, which were then secured by the police.
Penalties and Future Legislative Actions
During the operation, 71 infractions related to noise disturbance were recorded, leading to formal warnings. Additionally, seven fixed penalty notices were issued for drug use, and two motorists were apprehended for driving under the influence of narcotics near the site. One vehicle was impounded, and significant sound equipment, including about fifteen speakers and three generators, was seized.
The French government, through the proposed Ripost bill, aims to impose harsher penalties on organizers and participants of such unauthorized gatherings, which frequently cause public disorder.
