Paris, June 24 – A new hotel, Le Magnifique, is slated to open its doors in September 2026 at 20 bis, rue de la Gaîté, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. Conceived by Jacques Blanc and entirely decorated by designer Vincent Darré, this 62-room establishment is set in a historically rich building, on the site of the former Théâtre des Mille Colonnes, aiming to reclaim the artistic identity inherited from Montparnasse’s bohemian soul.
A Return to Montparnasse’s Artistic Spirit on Rue de la Gaîté
Le Magnifique Hotel is poised to emerge in one of the capital’s most historically significant districts. Located on Rue de la Gaîté, the hotel occupies the former site of “Les Mille Colonnes,” a theater built in the early 19th century. This street, still vibrant with active performance venues, lends an immediate cultural dimension to the address, deeply embedded in the living fabric of the neighborhood.
The project draws its inspiration from a bygone era when Montparnasse was the indispensable crossroads for Parisian artists. In the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, painters, writers, and performers converged in this Left Bank district before it gradually faded in favor of the Right Bank. The Le Magnifique Hotel endeavors to rekindle this legacy, with an explicit ambition: to “reawaken the Left Bank.”
The initiative began in 2024 with Jacques Blanc, who quickly brought decorator and designer Vincent Darré into the project. The two describe their collaboration as a “creative love at first sight” that extended far beyond the initial scope of the project. Together, they have meticulously designed each space as a distinct theatrical staging, directly referencing the theatrical world surrounding the establishment.
A Concept Hotel Where Each Floor Tells a Different Story
Le Magnifique Hotel defines itself as an “artistic laboratory,” offering a complete immersion into the world of art and spectacle. From the moment guests step into the lobby, the theme is evident: hand-painted columns evoke those of the nearby La Coupole, a grand fresco celebrates the worlds of art and circus, and the reception desk is adorned with antique keys, inviting visitors into a dreamlike realm.
A glass elevator, embellished with mermaids, transports guests through five floors, each corresponding to a distinct universe: The Garden of Eden, Atlantis, The Utopian City, The Milky Way, and The Artists’ Paradise. The patio, meanwhile, conjures a Greek palace with mythological-themed mosaics reflected in the pool’s water. Each space functions as an act in a play, with its own visual and narrative codes.
The hotel’s bar, named Le Picabia in homage to Parisian painter Francis Picabia, beats to the rhythm of the surrounding theaters: a bell announces show openings and intermissions. All 62 rooms are original creations by Vincent Darré, from the furniture to the earthenware and lighting fixtures. As the designer himself summarizes, the hotel aims to offer travelers “an atypical vision where all arts are united,” paying tribute to the creative freedom of the geniuses who made Montparnasse a legend.
