Lyon: Action Store Closed Due to Severe Hygiene Violations and Mouse Infestation
Lyon, February 27, 2026 – A popular Action store located in the Gerland district of Lyon’s 7th arrondissement has been urgently closed by mayoral decree following a surprise and damning hygiene inspection. The closure, which took effect on Thursday, February 26, 2026, was prompted by the discovery of a significant rodent infestation, primarily mice, and numerous unsanitary conditions throughout the premises.
Immediate Closure Due to “Serious Risk of Contamination”
According to an official document consulted by our editorial team, the municipal health services conducted an inspection that revealed a “totally ineffective pest control plan.” The mayoral order states that “this situation presents a serious risk of food contamination,” necessitating immediate action without prior contradictory procedure due to the urgency of the matter.
Inspectors documented extensive evidence of mouse droppings “in the presence of foodstuffs and equipment intended for food contact” on the shelves. Furthermore, a “very significant quantity of mouse droppings in contact with food products, self-service, in the sales area” was observed.
Widespread Infestation and General Lack of Maintenance
The report detailed a disturbing array of hygiene failures, including:
- Numerous mouse droppings at the bottom of plastic crates containing self-service food products in the sales area.
- Extensive traces of rodent activity (mouse droppings) on the floor throughout the entire premises, particularly in the sales area, changing rooms, and storage areas.
- Numerous mouse droppings found in the manufactured goods sections, including clothing.
Beyond the rodent issue, the overall cleanliness of the store was severely criticized. The decree also highlighted:
- Numerous mouse droppings in staff locker compartments, in direct contact with staff uniforms.
- Several packages of food and manufactured products that were pierced or gnawed in the aisles.
- Numerous traces of dirt, food products, and debris on the floor beneath the shelves.
- Numerous traces of dirt and food debris within the shelves themselves.
The inspection also pointed to a “general lack of maintenance of the premises,” noting that “certain coatings/surfaces are deteriorated (pillars, false ceiling tiles, walls).” Additionally, cleaning equipment such as brooms and squeegees were found to be visibly dirty, and a completely blocked drain used for wastewater from cleaning operations was observed.
Reopening Contingent on Corrective Actions
The Action store will remain closed indefinitely until it addresses approximately twenty points of non-compliance. “The reopening of these premises, for an activity involving the handling of foodstuffs, is subject to the completion of all prescribed corrective actions, which must be verified by an authorized sworn agent” of the Health Department, the municipal Hygiene and Health service of the City of Lyon. A new municipal order will be required for the store to resume operations.
Action representatives were not immediately available for comment regarding the closure. This incident follows another recent urgent closure in Lyon, where several Pignol stores were shut down after a surprise hygiene inspection.
The closure of such a widely frequented store underscores the rigorous enforcement of hygiene standards by municipal authorities in Lyon, aiming to protect public health and ensure consumer safety.
