Lyon Airport Expands 2026 Route Network with New Destinations

Lyon, France – Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS) is preparing for an expanded route network in 2026, introducing new destinations that will further enhance travel options for passengers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Despite an already solid base of around 130 direct destinations served by some fifty airlines, the airport continues to evolve, adding routes to meet growing demand.

New Destinations Taking Flight in 2026

While the number of entirely new routes for 2026 is modest, the additions are strategic. Transavia will launch new services to Catania (Sicily) and Izmir (Turkey) during the year. Volotea will introduce flights to Billund, Denmark, a destination also being offered from other French airports. Wizz Air is set to commence flights to London-Luton from June.

These new additions complement four easyJet routes launched in the previous winter season-Tangier, Pristina, Las Palmas, and Sharm El-Sheikh-which will see their first full year of operation in 2026, solidifying their presence in the airport’s offerings.

Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa: A Major African Gateway

The most significant announcement for 2026 is the introduction of flights to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, operated by Ethiopian Airlines. Starting in July, the service will offer three flights per week. This new connection will provide Lyon residents with access to 65 direct destinations across Africa via Ethiopian Airlines’ extensive hub. It is important to note that all flights from Lyon will include a brief stopover in Geneva before continuing to Addis Ababa.

A “Zen Line” for Smoother Security Checks

While not a new initiative for 2026, the airport continues to highlight its innovative “Zen Line” service, introduced in the previous year. This free service allows passengers to reserve a 15-minute time slot for security checks between seven days and 24 hours before their departure. This aims to minimize waiting times and provide a more relaxed pre-boarding experience, with dedicated lanes for those who utilize the service.

Lyon Airport: A Global Top 100 Performer

Despite being outranked by Nice and Marseille in terms of passenger traffic among French regional airports, and having a less extensive long-haul network compared to the nearby Geneva Airport, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry maintains a strong international reputation for quality and services. The airport has consistently featured in the global Top 100 of “best of the best” airports for several years. This recognition places it alongside major capital city airports and renowned hubs of large global airlines, making it the only French regional airport to achieve such an accolade. Traveler feedback consistently reflects positive experiences, underscoring the airport’s commitment to passenger satisfaction.

Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport continues to attract and serve a diverse range of travelers, offering a robust network that includes low-cost carriers, seasonal flights, and regular services across Europe and the Mediterranean, alongside crucial long-haul connections.
