Lyon Unveils New TB12 Tram-Bus Line: Enhanced Public Transport for the 3rd Arrondissement
Lyon, February 28, 2026 – The city of Lyon today marked the official launch of its new TB12 tram-bus line, a significant addition to the local public transport network (TCL). This new service, which commenced operations on Saturday, February 28, 2026, aims to improve connectivity between Lyon Part-Dieu and Kimmerling-Genêts in the 3rd arrondissement.
Initially conceptualized as a ‘high-level service bus’ (BHNS), the TB12 line promises a level of service comparable to that of a tramway. It utilizes 100% electric, new-generation trolleybuses, which are described as spacious and comfortable, ensuring a pleasant journey for commuters.
Key Features and Route Details of the TB12 Line
The TB12 line operates on weekdays from 4:30 AM to 00:50 AM, with a frequency of 7 minutes during peak hours. It serves a total of 12 stations, strategically located to enhance accessibility across the 3rd arrondissement. These stations include:
- Gare Part-Dieu Vivier Merle (connecting with metro B and tram T1)
- Part-Dieu Servient (served only in the direction of Part-Dieu)
- Garibaldi – Paul Bert
- Bir Hakeim (connecting with metro D)
- Félix-Faure Vivier-Merle
- Archives Parc Mandela (connecting with tram T4)
- Rouget de l’Isle
- Maisons Neuves
- Cyrano
- Reconnaissance Balzac (connecting with tram T3)
- Place Ronde
- Kimmerling Genêts (connecting with tram T6)
The line’s design incorporates priority at traffic lights and dedicated lanes, which are expected to guarantee a smooth and regular journey, minimizing delays and improving overall travel times for passengers.
Impact on Urban Mobility and Future Expansion Plans
According to Sytral, the public transport authority, the TB12 line is projected to serve approximately 23,700 passengers daily by 2030. It is anticipated to significantly improve service along Rue Garibaldi and Avenue Félix Faure, bolster the existing offer on Route de Genas alongside line C9, and complement tramway T3 on shared sections of its route.
Looking ahead, the TB12 line has ambitious extension plans. By 2027, it is slated to be extended to the Sept Chemins station in Vaulx-en-Velin, passing through Villeurbanne and Bron. Further expansion is potentially planned to reach Parilly two years later, by 2029, further integrating and expanding Lyon’s public transport network.
This new tram-bus line is a testament to Lyon’s ongoing commitment to developing sustainable and efficient urban mobility solutions, aiming to provide residents with reliable and comfortable transport options.
