Lyon Métropole Shifts to the Right: Second Round Election Results

Lyon, March 23 – The second round of the 2026 metropolitan elections in Lyon, held yesterday, March 22, has resulted in a decisive shift to the right, with Véronique Sarselli’s Grand Cœur lyonnais lists securing an absolute majority on the Métropole Council. This outcome marks a significant defeat for the outgoing ecologist president, Bruno Bernard, despite ecologists retaining control of the City of Lyon.

Sarselli’s Victory and Bernard’s Concession

Véronique Sarselli’s lists emerged victorious, leading in 9 constituencies compared to only 5 for Bruno Bernard’s lists. Bernard, who failed to secure an agreement with La France insoumise (LFI) before the second round, acknowledged his defeat. “It’s a thunderclap,” Bernard stated, “while the ecologists must retain Lyon in the City, the Métropole is shifting to the right.” He extended his republican congratulations to Sarselli.

Bernard expressed regret over the inability to form a unified left-wing front for the Métropole elections, unlike the situation in the City of Lyon. He highlighted that the failure to unite was due to municipal stakes in Vaulx-en-Velin and Vénissieux, which ultimately impacted the Métropole results.

Right-Wing Dominance Across Constituencies

The right-wing Grand Cœur lyonnais lists secured 10 constituencies, while the alliance of the left and ecologists won only 4. The first round had already shown an advantage for Sarselli and Jean-Michel Aulas’s lists, with Grand Cœur lyonnais winning 4 constituencies outright. Gilles Gascon secured 51.49% in Porte des Alpes, Véronique Sarselli 60.69% in Ouest, Sébastien Michel 52.36% in Val de Saône, and Alexandre Vincendet 54.37% in Plateau Nord-Caluire.
