Lyon, March 9 – The highly anticipated “Terrasses de la Presqu’île” project, led by the Métropole de Lyon along the banks of the Saône River, is finally moving forward after a period of suspension. Following a wall collapse in 2024 that brought a halt to some of the construction, work is now set to resume, with a partial delivery of the lower section of the project expected by summer 2026.
Project Resumes After Wall Reinforcement
The project, which began in 2022, faced an unexpected setback in 2024 when a retaining wall along the river suffered a collapse. According to the Métropole de Lyon, reinforcement work on this wall is expected to be finalized “shortly,” following several intense periods of Saône River flooding. This crucial step will pave the way for the continuation of the development.
“The development of the lower part, closest to the river, will take over for a provisional delivery in the summer of 2026,” stated the Métropole de Lyon. This initial phase will see the creation of a “fluvial garden” and the restoration of pedestrian continuity along this section of the riverbank. The planting of vegetation is scheduled for winter 2026, a period deemed most favorable for optimal root establishment.
A Flourishing Riverside and Enhanced Connectivity
The “Terrasses de la Presqu’île” project is designed to transform the Saône riverbanks into an attractive and accessible public space. The fluvial garden will introduce new green areas and biodiversity to the city center, offering residents and visitors a tranquil environment for relaxation and leisure. The re-established pedestrian continuity will significantly improve access along the river, connecting different parts of the Presqu’île and encouraging active transportation.
Last summer, an children’s play area within the project was successfully opened to the public and has since seen considerable use, demonstrating the public’s eagerness for these new urban amenities.
Long-Awaited Development for Lyonnais
The project has been eagerly awaited by the residents of Lyon since its inception. The temporary halt had caused some frustration, but the latest announcement brings renewed optimism. The “Terrasses de la Presqu’île” is part of a broader initiative to revitalize Lyon’s urban landscape, enhancing its appeal and quality of life for its inhabitants.
This development aligns with the city’s commitment to sustainable urban planning, prioritizing green spaces, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and the integration of natural elements into the urban fabric. The partial delivery this summer will mark a significant milestone, allowing the public to begin enjoying parts of this ambitious transformation.
Further details regarding the project’s subsequent phases and overall completion timeline are expected to be announced by the Métropole de Lyon in due course.
