Lyon, February 19, 2026 – Sytral Mobilités has inaugurated two significant public transport lines in Lyon, enhancing connectivity and service for residents and commuters. The first, an extension of the T6 tram line, became operational on February 14, connecting the university district of La Doua in northern Villeurbanne with the hospital hub in eastern Lyon. The second, a high-level service tram-bus line, is set to further improve the network.
T6 Tram Extension: Connecting Key Hubs
The extended T6 tram line now provides a direct and efficient link between major employment and study centers, bypassing the metropolitan heart. Bruno Bernard, President of Sytral Mobilités, emphasized during the inauguration that this new segment offers “high-performance service without passing through the heart of the metropolis to reach important employment and study hubs.”
Previously, the T6 line only connected the south and east of Lyon. The 5.4-kilometer northern extension, featuring ten new stations, now serves previously underserved areas of Villeurbanne, particularly Grand Clément. This expansion provides a rapid and direct connection to the center of Lyon’s second-largest city.
The T6 North line, projected to serve 55,000 passengers by 2030, represents a substantial investment of 175 million euros and took nearly three years to construct. This project is a key part of Lyon’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its public transport infrastructure.
New Tram-Bus Line: Enhancing East-West Connectivity
In addition to the T6 tram extension, a new high-level service tram-bus line is being introduced. This line will connect the southern part of Part-Dieu to the eastern side of the city center, further strengthening east-west links within Lyon. Details regarding the exact launch date and specific routes of this tram-bus line are expected to be released by Sytral Mobilités soon.
Impact on Lyon’s Urban Mobility
These two new lines are expected to significantly improve daily commutes for thousands of residents, reduce traffic congestion, and promote the use of public transport. By connecting key residential, educational, and employment areas, Sytral Mobilités aims to create a more integrated and efficient urban transport system.
The investments in these new lines underscore Lyon’s commitment to sustainable urban development and providing its growing population with accessible and reliable transport options. The strategic placement of these lines is designed to alleviate pressure on existing routes and offer alternative travel options, particularly for those commuting to and from the city’s major poles of activity.
Further information on the new tram-bus line, including detailed schedules and stops, will be made available through Sytral Mobilités’ official channels.
