Reventin-Vaugris, July 2, 2026 – Customs officers at the Reventin-Vaugris toll plaza on the A7 motorway, south of Lyon, have made another substantial drug seizure. A 21-year-old man from Villeurbanne was apprehended on June 24, 2026, transporting 180 kilograms of cocaine in his vehicle, with an estimated street value of 11 million euros.
Major Cocaine Haul at A7 Toll Plaza
The arrest took place as the driver, returning from Spain, was heading towards the Lyon metropolitan area. The illicit cargo was discovered in five sports bags, which were not even concealed, in the boot of his Cupra vehicle, according to local reports. This incident follows another significant bust at the same toll plaza on June 19, where an individual was caught with 766 kilograms of cannabis.
The A7 motorway is frequently used for drug trafficking from Spain, a major hub for the illicit trade in Southern Europe, towards the Lyon and Grenoble regions.
Suspect with Extensive Criminal History
The 21-year-old suspect was immediately taken into police custody following the customs inspection. He is a resident of Villeurbanne, within the Lyon metropolitan area, and has a history of five prior convictions for drug trafficking. Furthermore, he is currently under investigation for organized possession of explosives, a case in which he is prohibited from entering the Rhône department and is subject to judicial supervision.
Following his arrest on the A7, the man was placed in pre-trial detention. He was scheduled to appear before the Vienne court in Isère on Wednesday, July 1, but requested a delay to prepare his defense. His trial has now been set for August 31, 2026.
Drug Valued at €11 Million on the Market
The seized cocaine has an estimated wholesale value of 3 million euros. However, its street value is considerably higher, reaching an astronomical 11 million euros. This substantial amount underscores the scale of the drug trafficking operation.
During the arrest, it was also revealed that the courier was driving a Spanish-registered vehicle with false license plates and did not possess a valid driving license. These additional offenses further complicate the legal situation for the suspect.
Continued Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
This latest seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of customs and law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking routes that utilize major European arteries like the A7. The strategic location of the Reventin-Vaugris toll makes it a frequent point of interception for such operations.
Authorities continue to monitor and enhance surveillance along these routes to disrupt the flow of illegal narcotics and bring perpetrators to justice. The repeated success at this particular toll plaza demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted interventions.
The investigation into this case is ongoing, and further details may emerge as the trial date approaches. The significant value of the seized drugs and the suspect’s criminal background suggest a connection to larger organized crime networks operating across Europe.
