New Air Link from Lyon to Addis Ababa to Launch This Summer

Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, January 19, 2026 – A new air route connecting Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport with Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, will commence on July 2, 2026. Ethiopian Airlines will operate three flights per week, offering travelers a new gateway to East Africa. This development was announced by Lyon Airport, highlighting the expansion of its international connections.

Ethiopian Airlines to Connect Lyon with East Africa

Starting in early July, passengers will be able to fly from Lyon to Addis Ababa on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The launch of this route is expected to open up new opportunities for tourism and business between the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and Ethiopia. Addis Ababa, with a population approaching 6 million, is described as the “beating heart of Ethiopia,” a vibrant city blending ancient traditions with contemporary energy, renowned for its cultural diversity, bustling markets, world-class museums, and thriving art scene.

A “Direct” Route with a Catch: Geneva Layover

Despite being presented as a “direct” link by Lyon Airport, the flights will include a layover in Geneva. This detail, confirmed by the airline, means passengers will need to make a stopover before reaching their final destination in Addis Ababa. Travelers are advised to compare prices and total travel times with other airlines to fully understand their options.

Addis Ababa: A Hub of Culture and Economy

Addis Ababa, situated on a plateau over 2,000 meters above sea level, serves as the political capital of Africa and a crucial economic center for Ethiopia. The city offers a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors, from exploring historical sites to engaging with its dynamic urban life. This new connection is anticipated to facilitate greater access to this fascinating destination for travelers from the Lyon region.

Expansion of International Connectivity for Lyon

This new service by Ethiopian Airlines marks another step in the expansion of international routes from Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport. The airport continues to enhance its offerings, providing more diverse travel options for residents of Lyon and the surrounding areas. The introduction of flights to a major African capital underscores the growing importance of Lyon as an international travel hub.

The announcement comes amidst a broader trend of increasing air travel options from regional French airports. While the convenience of a truly direct flight remains a goal for many travelers, the new route, even with its layover, represents a significant addition to the airport’s summer schedule and a new link to the African continent.
