New Scam Uncovered in Lyon Metro: Pickpockets Pose as TCL Agents
Lyon, July 16 – A new and sophisticated scam is currently targeting tourists in the Lyon metro network, with particular prevalence at the Vieux Lyon station. Pickpockets, disguised as agents of the TCL public transport network, are reportedly robbing unsuspecting travelers.
Modus Operandi: Gaining Trust and Robbing Victims
The scam, which was first reported on Saturday, July 11, involves groups of four to five individuals, often including women, some of whom wear TCL-branded vests. One of the individuals has been described as a “young woman of small stature with long brown hair wearing a TCL vest.” These fake agents approach tourists, pretending to offer assistance or guidance.
Once they have gained the trust of their victims, the groups reportedly direct them towards a secluded alleyway near the entrance of the Vieux Lyon station, where they then proceed to rob them. This method marks a new level of sophistication for pickpocketing in the city and its metropolitan area.
Vieux Lyon Station: A Tourist Hotspot
The Vieux Lyon metro station, a popular tourist destination, appears to be the primary target for these criminals. The area’s high foot traffic and the presence of numerous visitors make it an ideal location for such a scam to flourish, especially during the busy summer season.
Authorities have urged both residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, particularly when approached by individuals claiming to be TCL agents. While the methodology of the thieves is still being confirmed, the public transport network (TCL) has been contacted for further information but has not yet provided additional details.
Increased Vigilance Recommended During Summer Season
With the influx of tourists and numerous summer events taking place in Lyon, there is concern that this scam could spread to other parts of the public transport network. Travelers are advised to be attentive to their surroundings and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an official agent.
This incident follows recent reports of other issues within the TCL network, including dozens of driver and passenger discomfort incidents and numerous air conditioning failures, further highlighting the need for improved safety and service within the public transport system.
The development of this new scam underscores the importance of staying alert and cautious, especially in crowded tourist areas and on public transport. Tourists are encouraged to seek assistance from official information points or uniformed police officers if they have any doubts or concerns.
