Nouméa, New Caledonia, February 25 – A 55-year-old doctor from Caen, Calvados, Cyril Chevalier, died on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after being fatally wounded in a shark attack while practicing wing foil in a bay in Nouméa, New Caledonia. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM local time (7:30 AM in Paris).
Tragic Discovery and Emergency Response
The lifeless body of the victim was discovered by pleasure boaters who immediately alerted authorities. Following the discovery, Anse-Vata beach, one of Nouméa’s most frequented bays by water sports enthusiasts, was evacuated to facilitate rescue operations. Emergency services urged extreme caution to the public.
According to police sources, Cyril Chevalier, an emergency physician in Nouméa, succumbed to his injuries sustained from the shark bite. France 3 Normandie reported that Chevalier, originally from Caen, had moved to the island with his family.
Investigation Underway to Determine Circumstances
An autopsy of the body is scheduled to be performed with the assistance of a shark specialist, as indicated by Nouméa prosecutor Yves Dupas. A witness is also expected to be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
“We do not know at this time how the attack unfolded. We are trying to determine the circumstances,” stated Yves Dupas on Sunday evening. This tragic event follows a period of particularly heavy rainfall, a phenomenon known to increase the risk of sharks being present near coastal areas.
Previous Incidents and Local Concerns
This incident is not isolated in the Anse-Vata bay. In early 2023, three similar incidents occurred within a few weeks in the same area, one of which resulted in the death of an Australian tourist. These recurring events highlight ongoing concerns about shark presence in the popular bay.
The local authorities are expected to review safety measures and public advisories in light of this latest fatality. The community in Nouméa and Caen mourns the loss of Dr. Chevalier, a dedicated medical professional.
