Paris, June 29, 2026 – The Esports World Cup is set to make history in 2026, as Paris will host the prestigious international competition for the first time outside of Riyadh. From July 6 to August 23, 2026, the French capital will become the epicenter of global competitive gaming, welcoming more than 2,000 players from 100 different countries. These athletes, representing 200 clubs, will compete in 25 tournaments across 24 major video game titles.
A Landmark Event for Global Esports
The decision to bring the Esports World Cup to Paris underscores France’s growing prominence in the international esports scene. Over recent years, France has solidified its position as a leading nation in global esports, fueled by a vibrant community, internationally recognized talent, and a well-structured ecosystem. According to the France Esport Barometer, 6 million French individuals identify as esports practitioners, equating to one in eight internet users over 15 years old. Furthermore, over 10 million spectators regularly follow competitive gaming events. These figures highlight the deep integration of esports into the national cultural and sporting landscape, particularly within the Île-de-France region, which includes Paris.
To facilitate this groundbreaking event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on June 27, 2026, between the Esports Foundation (EF), a non-profit organization dedicated to the sustainable development of esports, and the French Ministry of Sports, Youth, and Community Life, represented by Minister Marina Ferrari. This agreement formalizes an unprecedented collaboration between the two parties, ensuring the smooth execution of the competition on French soil while adhering to national regulations.
Official Partnership to Structure French Esports Long-Term
Beyond the logistical organization of the Parisian competition, the MoU aims to fundamentally structure the national esports ecosystem for the long term. To achieve this, a Joint Coordination Committee has been established between the Esports Foundation and the Ministry. This bipartisan body is tasked with overseeing the partnership, coordinating strategic initiatives, and ensuring that the event leaves a concrete and measurable legacy for France. This legacy includes empowering youth, fostering digital literacy, and promoting French talent in the esports arena.
The Ministry’s commitments include comprehensive operational support, such as coordination with public services, facilitating visa and work permit acquisition for international participants, ensuring event security, managing infrastructure logistics, and liaising with all relevant public stakeholders. The event must also meet stringent requirements concerning accessibility, data protection, minor safeguarding, gender equality, eco-responsibility, and the fight against violence and discrimination.
The Esports Foundation, for its part, pledges to establish a direct communication channel with French authorities for regular planning updates, to highlight France’s role as the host nation across its global platforms, and to guarantee the sporting integrity of the competition through rigorous protocols. These protocols encompass fairness, ethics, anti-cheat measures, and player well-being. By hosting this event, France joins an exclusive group of nations that have welcomed major global video game competitions, following significant events centered around titles such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Street Fighter.
The Esports World Cup 2026 is anticipated to be a significant cultural and economic boon for Paris, further cementing its status as a global hub for innovation and major international events. The event promises an unforgettable summer for esports enthusiasts and a historic moment for the city.
