SNCF Ordered to Pay Historic €274.8 Million Indemnity for Canceled Gare du Nord Project

The ruling comes after SNCF unilaterally terminated a controversial extension project for the Gare du Nord in Paris in September 2021, opting instead for a more modest renovation plan. The decision, delivered on Monday, February 9, 2026, was hailed by Gare du Nord 2024, the entity representing the concessionaire, as a recognition of the wrongful termination of the concession contract.
The abandoned project, which aimed at a significant expansion of the Gare du Nord, has been a subject of contention for over four years. Ceetrus, a subsidiary of New Immo (an autonomous company of the Mulliez Family Association), had been granted the concession for the station’s renovation. SNCF Plans to Appeal the Decision
SNCF Gares et Connexions, the SNCF subsidiary responsible for managing the national railway operator’s real estate assets, acknowledged the court’s decision but announced its intention to appeal. A spokesperson for SNCF stated that the company is “aware” of the ruling and has decided to “appeal against it.”
This judgment represents a significant setback for SNCF in its ongoing dispute with Ceetrus. In 2023, SNCF had secured an initial legal victory against Ceetrus before the commercial court, receiving 47 million euros in compensation. However, the latest ruling reverses this trend, favoring the concessionaire.
Gare du Nord 2024 expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the decision “re-establishes the facts and highlights the solidity of the concessionaire’s legal position, as well as the quality of the work carried out from the outset by all the teams mobilized on this project of general interest.”
Details of the Compensation
According to the judgment text consulted by AFP, SNCF Gares et Connexions is ordered to pay “229 million euros excluding tax, or 274.8 million euros including all taxes, plus default interest at a rate of 8% from February 23, 2022, as well as the capitalization of interest on February 23, 2023, and on each annual due date since that date, in compensation for the damages suffered due to the wrongful termination of the concession contract of February 22, 2019.”
The Gare du Nord, one of Europe’s busiest railway stations, serves as a major hub for national and international train services.
