Chaponnay Overrun by “Colossal” Traveller Convoy: Mayor Files Complaint Amidst Local Anger

Chaponnay, June 1, 2026 – Several hundred members of the travelling community arrived in the commune of Chaponnay, in the Rhône region near Lyon, on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The arrival of an estimated 150 to 200 caravans has provoked strong reactions from the mayor and local residents, particularly as designated reception areas in the sector are reportedly saturated.

According to multiple residents, a “colossal” convoy of caravans descended upon the 4,500-inhabitant commune in the afternoon. “Chaponnay was blocked and saw its park invaded by hundreds of caravans,” lamented a local “defence” collective. An inhabitant testified, “To see a convoy of 200 caravans arrive, potentially representing between 400 and 600 people in the very heart of the village, is simply colossal. There is a real disturbance to public order here, and action must be taken immediately.” The resident also expressed regret that “the very heart of Chaponnay” had not been protected.

Municipal Park Occupied, Traffic Chaos Ensues

The caravans have set up camp in the municipal Raymond Durand Park. “This park has no serious barriers; you enter it like a mill,” a resident noted. The influx of this large convoy significantly disrupted local traffic. The main road, Route de Corbas, experienced saturation around 5:00 PM, with traffic blocked at several intersections, forcing residents to seek alternative routes, as reported by Le Progrès.

Mayor Files Complaint, Authorities Advise Legal Procedures

The municipality issued a statement deploring the situation: “Our village has been invaded with the arrival of a group of travellers estimated at approximately 200 caravans. Despite our efforts to prevent the illegal occupation of our municipal Raymond Durand Park, the authorities, who arrived in large numbers on site, instructed us to let them settle and initiate legal procedures.” The statement continued, “We have already confirmed our intention to implement all legal procedures. Gendarmerie crews will ensure increased surveillance in our commune. We ask you not to interfere with ongoing procedures through interventions that would be perceived as inappropriate.”

Mayor Nicolas Varigny has confirmed his decision to file a complaint. The travellers have reportedly indicated their intention to remain for fifteen days on the municipal park grounds, which are also scheduled to host upcoming events. The Rhône gendarmerie was notified and intervened to facilitate traffic flow in the area.

Context of Saturated Reception Areas

The incident highlights a recurring issue of saturated reception areas for travellers in the region. This situation often leads to tensions between local authorities, residents, and the travelling community when informal encampments are established. The mayor’s decision to pursue legal action underscores the municipality’s stance on the unauthorised occupation of public land.

Local authorities face the challenge of balancing the legal obligations to provide suitable reception facilities for travellers with the concerns of residents regarding public order, property damage, and the appropriate use of municipal spaces. The long-term resolution of such situations typically involves legal proceedings to secure eviction orders and the identification of alternative, authorised sites.

The current situation in Chaponnay is a developing story, with gendarmes maintaining a presence to monitor the site and manage any potential disturbances. The municipality awaits the outcome of the legal procedures initiated to address the occupation of the Raymond Durand Park.
