Two Fatalities Reported in Horrific Car-Tram Accident in Villeurbanne, Lyon
Villeurbanne, March 16, 2026 – A devastating accident involving a car and a TCL tram on Monday evening in Villeurbanne, within the Lyon metropolitan area, has left two people dead and one critically injured. The incident, which occurred around 8:55 PM, unfolded after a police pursuit of a vehicle suspected of theft.
According to police sources and confirmed by the Rhône prefecture, the collision took place between Cours André Philipp and Rue Henri Rolland, in the area between the Charpennes and Tonkin districts. The car, allegedly involved in a ‘roulotage’ incident, fled at high speed after encountering a National Police patrol on Boulevard Stalingrad, which runs alongside the Parc de la Tête d’Or. The prefecture clarified that the police vehicle did not engage in a high-speed chase.
High-Speed Collision with a T4 Tram
Several hundred meters from the initial encounter, the fleeing vehicle struck a T4 tram at a traffic light intersection. The impact was described as extremely violent. Inside the car were three occupants: two were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third sustained very serious injuries. The critically wounded individual was transported to a hospital in absolute emergency, and their prognosis remains guarded.
Remarkably, none of the passengers inside the tram were injured in the collision. However, the tram driver was taken into care in a state of shock due to the traumatic nature of the event.
