Volotea is continuing its expansion from Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport. Following the announcement of a new service to Poitiers in autumn, the airline has revealed a new sunny destination for summer 2026: Alghero, Sardinia. This new route underscores Lyon-Saint Exupéry’s growing role in European territorial connectivity.
New Service to Alghero from Spring 2026
From May 29, 2026, Volotea will offer two weekly flights to Alghero, every Monday and Friday, throughout the summer season, from May to September. Located in northwestern Sardinia, this Mediterranean destination is renowned for its fortified historic center, unspoiled coastline, and crystal-clear beaches.
With this addition, the airline adds a seventh Italian destination to its network from Lyon, thereby enhancing the attractiveness of the Lyon platform for both leisure travelers and short stays.
Volotea, a Key Player in Lyon’s Air Connectivity
As the second-largest airline by number of destinations at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, Volotea continues to expand its offerings from the metropolitan area. With over 13,000 seats available on the Lyon-Alghero route, the airline will serve 34 destinations from Lyon, spread across 11 countries.
Algeria, Germany, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and the Czech Republic: Volotea’s network illustrates Lyon’s increasing prominence as a regional hub for Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
Development in Line with Traveler Expectations
This new service aligns with Volotea’s strategy of offering direct, accessible flights tailored to the needs of residents in major regional cities. For Lyon residents, Alghero represents an additional opportunity for a summer getaway to a highly popular destination.
“We are delighted to announce the addition of Alghero to our network from Lyon for the summer period. This new route illustrates our desire to strengthen connectivity between France and Italy and to offer attractive destinations to the residents of the Lyon region,” emphasized the airline’s French management.
Growth Praised by Aéroports de Lyon
For Aéroports de Lyon, the opening of this route is also seen as a positive signal for the platform. Italian destinations are among the most requested by passengers, and their regular development testifies to the dynamism of leisure traffic from Lyon.
Since its establishment at the platform in 2018, Volotea has shown the strongest growth among airlines present at Lyon-Saint Exupéry, solidifying its position as a major player in regional air transport.
Volotea, a Fast-Growing Airline in Europe
Founded in 2011, Volotea is now one of the fastest-growing airlines in Europe. In December 2025, it surpassed the milestone of 80 million passengers transported across its entire network.
The airline serves more than 110 airports and has bases in 20 European capitals and major regional cities, including Lyon. In 2025, Volotea will operate over 430 routes, offer nearly 14 million seats, and operate more than 80,000 flights with a fleet of 41 Airbus aircraft.
Connectivity, Economic Development, and Environmental Transition
Beyond air transport, Volotea claims an active role in the economic development of the territories it serves. With over 2,250 employees, the airline contributes to enhancing the attractiveness of regions while committing to a trajectory of reducing its carbon footprint.
The company has already reduced its direct CO₂ emissions per passenger-kilometer by more than 50% since 2012 and now aims for a 55% to 60% reduction by 2030.
A New Destination that Enhances Lyon’s Attractiveness
With the opening of the Lyon-Alghero route, Volotea confirms its lasting presence in Lyon and contributes to strengthening the metropolitan area’s international connectivity. This dynamic benefits travelers, the local economy, and the attractiveness of the Lyon territory.
