Wildfires Rage Near Lyon: Over 130 Firefighters Mobilized, A89 Affected
Lyon, June 27, 2026 – Several wildfires have erupted across the region of Lyon, prompting the mobilization of more than 130 firefighters. A major incident is ongoing in Échalas, southwest of the Lyon metropolitan area, where a brush fire has necessitated a large-scale response. The A89 motorway has also been impacted by a separate fire, leading to traffic disruptions.
Échalas Fire Under Control, Surveillance Continues
As of 10:40 PM, the Rhône Prefecture announced that the vegetation fire in Échalas is under control. A surveillance system will remain in place throughout the night to monitor the area. Earlier reports at 8:00 PM indicated that the fire was no longer progressing, though extinction operations were fully engaged.
The Departmental-Metropolitan Fire and Rescue Service (SDMIS) deployed 45 vehicles and over 130 firefighters to the Échalas site. Gendarmerie forces were also mobilized to secure the perimeter. A Dragon 69 helicopter from Civil Security provided aerial support to ground teams. The Échalas town hall activated its municipal safeguard plan, and authorities continued to urge the public to avoid the sector and follow emergency instructions.
The initial alert for the Échalas fire was issued at 6:45 PM by the Rhône Prefecture, following a brush fire outbreak.
A89 Motorway Affected by Fire Near Sainte-Colombe-sur-Gand
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, motorists on the A89 in the Lyon-Clermont direction were advised to exercise caution due to a fire near Sainte-Colombe-sur-Gand. The Loire Prefecture reported that the right lane of the motorway was closed to facilitate emergency services, causing significant traffic difficulties.
Authorities requested road users to “facilitate the passage of emergency services” and recommended “avoiding the sector” if possible. This incident, initially reported at 5:25 PM, highlighted the widespread nature of the fires across the region.
Regional Mobilization and Aerial Support
The situation is being closely monitored at a regional level, with several natural space fires currently active. In response to the multiplication of interventions, the Zonal Operational Centre was activated to Level 2 to oversee the various events and support affected departments. Aerial resources, including water bomber planes and helicopters, are also engaged in the fight against the blazes.
The public is urged to stay away from affected areas, refrain from flying drones to avoid hindering aircraft operations, and comply with instructions from emergency services.
High Fire Risk Due to Intense Heatwave and “Hairdryer Effect”
These fires occur in a particularly sensitive context. Since Saturday morning, authorities have warned of meteorological conditions highly conducive to fire outbreaks. With temperatures ranging between 37 and 39°C, the Rhône and Loire departments are experiencing an intense heatwave.
The Rhône Prefecture emphasized that in addition to the high temperatures, a “south wind, even more noticeable than the day before, creates a ‘hairdryer effect’ on the vegetation.” This phenomenon rapidly dries out natural spaces, significantly increasing the risk of fire. According to state services, “the risk of fire ignition and spread is high in the Rhône department and the Lyon metropolitan area.” Authorities are therefore calling on the population to adopt good practices to limit risks.
