Yvelines, July 10 – The Yvelines department is once again under a red heatwave alert, effective Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 12 PM. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 37°C until Tuesday, July 14, posing a serious health risk to all residents, regardless of age or health condition. In response, the prefecture has issued several strict orders, prohibiting fireworks, sporting events, and large gatherings across the department until July 15, 2026.
Fireworks Banned Amid High Fire Risk
Given the severe risk of wildfires and conditions conducive to rapid fire spread, the prefect has issued an order prohibiting the setting off of fireworks and festive fires throughout the Yvelines from July 11 to July 15, 2026. While some exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis, subject to safety conditions and a favorable opinion from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 78), many 14th of July celebrations will be impacted. Residents are advised to check with their local municipalities regarding the status of planned fireworks displays.
Sports and Major Events Suspended
A prefectural order also bans, until further notice, all sporting events, competitions, gatherings, and collective training sessions within the department. Exceptions are possible for aquatic or nautical activities and for facilities equipped to ensure participant safety. Notably, the Ironman of Versailles has been canceled due to these restrictions.
Additional measures signed on July 10, 2026, include a temporary suspension of outdoor construction work and regulation of alcohol sales and consumption in public spaces. These actions aim to limit heat exposure and mitigate risks for the population.
Water Usage Restrictions and Safety Warnings
In addition to event cancellations, several water usage restrictions are in place. The Seine area, in the north of the department, has been under drought alert since Monday, July 6, while other zones remain under vigilance. In affected communes, water usage restrictions apply to conserve resources:
- Watering of gardens and green spaces is prohibited between 11 AM and 6 PM.
- Filling of private swimming pools is prohibited (except for topping up).
- Vehicle washing is prohibited at home and limited at stations.
- Agricultural irrigation and outdoor uses are strictly regulated.
The illegal opening of fire hydrants (known as ‘street pooling’) is also strictly prohibited. This offense deprives firefighters of essential resources, weakens the drinking water network, and can delay emergency response. Violators face penalties of five years imprisonment and a €75,000 fine.
Protecting Vulnerable Populations and Adopting Safe Practices
The elderly, disabled, chronically ill, pregnant women, infants, and isolated individuals are most vulnerable during a heatwave. They are encouraged to register with their municipal vulnerable persons registry to receive regular check-ins from the town hall. Cooled reception areas are open, and individuals needing to report a homeless person can call 115 (toll-free).
To cope with the heatwave, residents are advised to drink regularly without waiting to feel thirsty, spend several hours a day in a cool place, limit travel during the hottest hours, and avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors. A toll-free information hotline, 0 800 06 66 66, is available from 9 AM to 7 PM until the end of the heatwave, offering official government advice on heat protection. In case of emergency, call 15 (SAMU), 18 (firefighters), or 112 (European emergency number).
