Étampes, Essonne – The RN20 highway heading towards Paris has reopened to traffic following a significant accident that occurred this Friday morning. The incident, involving two light vehicles and a heavy goods vehicle, led to the complete closure of the road in the Province-Paris direction at the level of Étampes for several hours.

Details of the Accident and Emergency Response

The collision took place around 10:00 AM near the Mondésir interchange. According to initial reports, the lorry reportedly struck a car and a van transporting children with disabilities. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene to provide assistance to the drivers and passengers involved in the accident. Fortunately, the provisional assessment indicates no serious injuries.

National Police of Essonne had issued a recommendation via social media, urging motorists to “avoid the area and be very careful” while rescue operations were underway.

Traffic Disruption and Diversions

The accident caused considerable disruption to traffic flow, with both lanes of the RN20 towards Paris being closed. A diversion was quickly put in place by the Essonne Departmental Council. Motorists were advised to “turn back towards the province until Angerville, then take the RD191 towards Authon-la-Plaine/Étampes.”

The incident also impacted public transport. The Bus Essonne Sud-Ouest network’s X (formerly Twitter) feed announced that the Mondésir stop in the Étampes direction was suspended, and delays were expected on line 4413, which was rerouted via Saclas.

RN20 Reopens and Traffic Returns to Normal

As of 12:49 PM, the Bus Essonne Sud-Ouest network confirmed the reopening of the RN20 and the resumption of normal service for bus line 4413. This swift action by authorities and emergency services ensured that the disruption was minimized, allowing traffic to gradually return to normal conditions.

Motorists who had been anticipating extended journey times in the sector can now expect smoother travel. The precise cause of the accident is yet to be officially determined, but the focus remains on the quick and effective response that prevented any severe casualties and restored traffic flow.
