LYON, January 7 – Snowfall is confirmed for Lyon and the Rhône department this Wednesday, January 7, according to Météo-France and Lyon Météo. The region is currently under an orange vigilance for snow and ice, effective from 3 PM, and a yellow vigilance for extreme cold throughout the day.

Snow and Freezing Rain Across France

Météo-France has issued an orange vigilance for snow and freezing rain across 38 departments in France. A new weather disturbance is expected to cross the country from Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing snow and freezing rain to a large portion of the territory.

“Snow is confirmed for Lyon and its surroundings tomorrow, as well as Thursday morning. Please be careful when traveling,” stated Lyon Météo on Tuesday, January 6.

Up to 5 cm of Snow Expected in Rhône

Météo-France forecasts 1 to 5 cm of snow for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, including the Rhône department. The prefecture anticipates “flakes (which) should appear in the morning” with a “more significant disturbance in the afternoon with accumulations of 1 to 2 cm across the department and 3 cm, locally, on the higher grounds.”

“A risk of refreezing will persist throughout the night, leading to black ice,” the prefecture added, urging motorists to be cautious on the roads following a series of accidents in other regions that have resulted in 6 fatalities due to severe weather in recent hours.

Afternoon Snowfall and Overnight Accumulations

The first snowflakes are expected to fall on the Rhône in the afternoon on Wednesday. All sectors are concerned, including Lyon, Trades, Thizy, Beaujeu, Tarare, L’Arbresle, Soucieu-en-Jarrest, Pusignan, Villefranche-sur-Saône, Neuville, Belleville, and Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coize.

In the evening, the areas of Trades, Beaujeu, Thizy, Tarare, Belleville, L’Arbresle, Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coize, and Pusignan are also expected to experience snowfall. Overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, the entire Rhône department is likely to be affected by several centimeters of snow. By Thursday, rain is expected to dominate the weather across the department.

Travel Disruptions and Safety Warnings

The confirmed snowfall and potential for black ice raise concerns about travel conditions. Authorities strongly advise against unnecessary travel and recommend that those who must drive equip their vehicles with special gear, such as winter tires or chains. Public transportation may also experience disruptions. Several airports in France have already closed, and flights have been canceled in Lyon due to the adverse weather conditions.

The combination of snow, ice, and extreme cold poses significant risks. Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and follow official safety guidelines. Special attention should be paid to vulnerable individuals, and precautions should be taken to prevent cold-related illnesses.
