This initiative allows ordinary citizens to contribute to the selection of the city’s most iconic bread, a staple of French culture.

The baguette, an undeniable symbol of France, was officially added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022. Annually, approximately six billion baguettes are produced across France, highlighting its integral role in daily life. The competition, held annually since 1994, not only crowns the best baker but also grants them the prestigious honor of supplying the Élysée Palace for an entire year.

How to Become a Baguette Juror

Those with a discerning palate and a passion for this French delicacy are encouraged to apply through the official website of the City of Paris. Prospective jurors need to answer a question and provide their email address for a chance to be randomly selected. Three key conditions apply: applicants must be available for the entire afternoon of Thursday, February 26, 2026, have no food intolerances or allergies, and be of legal age.

The Judging Process

The selected Parisian residents will join a panel of experts, including elected officials, industry professionals, and journalists, on Thursday, February 26, 2026. Together, they will meticulously evaluate all competing baguettes based on five precise criteria: baking, taste, crumb, aeration, and overall appearance.

Strict Standards for Baguette Excellence

To qualify for the competition, baguettes must adhere to strict specifications. They must measure between 50 and 55 centimeters in length, weigh between 250 and 270 grams, and have a salt content not exceeding 1.4 grams per 100 grams of common bread (approximately 16.8 grams of salt per kilogram of flour with a hydration rate of 64%). Any baguettes failing to meet these standards will be disqualified from the tasting.

The 2025 title of “Best Baguette of Paris” was awarded to Mickaël Reydellet of La Parisienne bakery in the 10th arrondissement.
