17-Year-Old Syrian Attacked in Décines-Charpieu: Racist Motive Under Investigation

Lyon, January 20 – A 17-year-old Syrian boy was assaulted by three masked individuals on Monday, January 19, in Décines-Charpieu (Rhône) as he was making his way to high school, BFMTV and BFM Lyon have reported. The victim claims racist insults were uttered during the attack, leading authorities to investigate a potential racist motive.

Details of the Assault

According to a source close to the investigation, the adolescent sustained blows to several parts of his body and presented with lacerations on his chin, cheek, and forehead. Initial reports indicate that the assailants also shaved his eyebrows and cut his face with a razor, causing superficial injuries.

Racist Slurs Reported

The victim stated that during the aggression, he was subjected to racist insults, specifically: "dirty Arab, dirty Muslim." However, police sources, when questioned about these alleged racist remarks, exercised caution, explaining that the information had not yet been confirmed at that stage of the investigation.

Investigation Launched for Aggravated Violence

The Lyon public prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday evening the opening of an investigation "for aggravated violence under three circumstances (in a group, with a weapon, and due to the victim’s true or supposed membership of a race, ethnic group, nation, or religion)." The minor was issued a five-day total incapacity for work (ITT).

The prosecutor’s office added, "Investigations, entrusted to the DIPN, are actively continuing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, as well as to determine the precise circumstances and reasons for these acts. No hypothesis is excluded at this stage."

Prefect Condemns the Attack

Fabienne Buccio, the Prefect of Rhône, stated that she was "immediately informed" of the incident and expressed "full confidence in the DIPN investigators to shed light on this aggression and to find the perpetrators."

She further added, "Any racist aggression must outrage us and provoke a strong reaction, an awareness of these nauseating behaviors, especially when the victim is young."

Background and Context

This incident occurs amid a broader context of discussions around identity and social cohesion in France. The investigation’s focus on a potential racist motive underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the victim’s allegations. The community awaits further developments as the police work to identify those responsible and understand the full scope of the attack.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by certain communities and the importance of addressing hate-motivated crimes. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the exact nature of the attack and ensuring justice for the victim.
