Volotea Adds Alghero, Sardinia to Lyon Saint-Exupéry Routes

Lyon, January 22 – Volotea, the low-cost airline, announced on Wednesday, January 21, the launch of a new seasonal route from Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS) to Alghero, Sardinia. This new connection will commence in May, offering travelers a direct link to the popular Italian island.

The flights to Alghero, located in the northwest of Sardinia, will be available twice a week, every Monday and Friday. The service is scheduled to run throughout the summer season, starting from May 29 and continuing until October 2. This expansion aims to cater to the growing demand for sunny holiday destinations from Lyon.

Sardinia’s Charms Just 1.5 Hours Away

Alghero is renowned for its fortified historic center and crystal-clear beaches, making it an ideal destination for a sunny and exotic getaway. Volotea highlights these attractions as key reasons for choosing Alghero as their latest Italian offering.

This new route further strengthens Volotea’s presence in Italy from Lyon, bringing the total number of Italian cities served by the airline from Lyon to seven. Previously established routes include Bari, Florence, Olbia (also in Sardinia), Palermo, Salerno, and Venice. The addition of Alghero provides even more options for travelers looking to explore Italy’s diverse regions.

Affordable Travel Options

Tickets for the new Lyon-Alghero route are already available for purchase, with prices starting from as low as 19 euros. This competitive pricing is expected to make Sardinia an even more accessible destination for a wider range of travelers from the Lyon area.

The expansion of routes from Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport continues to enhance its connectivity and attractiveness as a major European hub. The airport has been actively working to introduce new destinations, offering more choices for both leisure and business travelers. This new Volotea service is a testament to the ongoing efforts to diversify and improve flight offerings.

Impact on Regional Tourism

The introduction of direct flights to Alghero is anticipated to have a positive impact on regional tourism, not only for outbound travelers from Lyon but also for inbound tourism to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Increased connectivity often leads to a rise in visitor numbers, benefiting local businesses and the economy.

Local authorities and tourism boards in both regions are expected to capitalize on this new link to promote cultural exchanges and boost tourism. The ease of access to Sardinia’s beautiful coastline and historic sites is likely to appeal to a broad demographic of travelers seeking short breaks and longer vacations.

This development is part of a broader trend of airlines expanding their networks to meet evolving travel preferences, particularly for leisure destinations that offer a blend of culture, relaxation, and scenic beauty. Volotea’s strategic decision to add Alghero underscores the appeal of Sardinia as a prime European holiday spot.
