Lyon, February 6 – Five minors, aged 14 and 15, were presented to justice on Thursday after being arrested in connection with a series of violent thefts, assaults, and intimidation tactics that have plagued Lyon’s 7th arrondissement for several weeks. The arrests come amidst growing concerns from residents and authorities about the escalating reign of terror by a teenage gang.

Victim Attacked Three Times in Five Months

Among the victims is Théo, a 19-year-old student, who was brutally beaten last week in front of his home in the 7th arrondissement. This was the third time Théo had been targeted by the same gang from the Girondins district within five months. His mother, speaking on Thursday, expressed alarm that her son’s full name was already circulating on social media, raising fears for his safety.

Police Impute Multiple Offenses to the Minors

The police have been actively investigating the gang, which has been under their radar for some time. The five arrested individuals are suspected of committing violent thefts between October 18 and January 31. Investigators attribute at least eleven offenses to one of the minors and seven to another. These incidents primarily involve thefts, some of which were carried out with weapons.

No Incarceration Possible for Minors at This Stage

Despite the severity of the alleged crimes, the public prosecutor has requested that the minors be placed under judicial supervision. Due to their age, immediate incarceration is not possible at this stage of the legal proceedings. This raises concerns among residents and authorities about the potential for recidivism, especially as some accomplices remain at large.

Community Concerns and Call for Action

The repeated attacks, particularly on individuals like Théo, have sparked widespread concern within the community. Residents of the 7th arrondissement are calling for more decisive action to address the problem of youth delinquency and ensure public safety. The mother of Théo, in a plea to the authorities, stated, “The police no longer know what to do.”

Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps

The investigation into the gang’s activities is ongoing. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend other members of the group who have not yet been arrested. The legal process for the five detained minors will continue, with the aim of preventing further incidents and ensuring justice for the victims. The situation highlights the complex challenges faced by law enforcement and the justice system when dealing with juvenile offenders involved in serious crimes.

The events underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle youth crime, combining law enforcement efforts with social programs and community engagement to address the root causes of such behavior.
