Paris, February 11 – The Porte de Montreuil, a strategic entrance to the city, is slated for a major transformation aimed at making it greener, more welcoming, and more functional. After years of discussion and a year of preparatory work, the extensive construction project is set to begin in mid-April, with the goal of completing the new public square by autumn 2027 and new buildings by 2031.
An Ambitious 220 Million Euro Project for a Greener Porte de Montreuil
The project, estimated at 220 million euros, is part of a broader initiative by the City of Paris to redesign key axes, making them safer, more modern, and environmentally responsible. The transformation of the Porte de Montreuil, located in the 20th arrondissement, is one of the largest such undertakings. The construction site’s base camp is expected to be established by early March.
The current aging and mineral-heavy gyratory overlooking the périphérique will be replaced by a vast, rectangular 40,000 m2 square. This new space will be heavily vegetated and pedestrianized in its central part, aiming to improve the daily lives of local residents.
Significant Greening Efforts and Enhanced Biodiversity
A key aspect of the project is the extensive planting of new trees and vegetation. A total of 704 new trees will be planted, 241 existing trees will be maintained, and 36 will be transplanted to other locations in Paris. The diverse plant palette for the future square will include tall trees, shrubs, and meadows. Melliferous plants (producing pollen and nectar) and small fruit trees will also be introduced to benefit pollinating insects and enhance local biodiversity.
This greening initiative aligns with Paris’s commitment to creating more sustainable and nature-friendly urban spaces, contributing to better air quality and a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike.
New Dynamics and Connections for a Strategic Entrance to Paris
The revitalized Porte de Montreuil is designed to serve as a metropolitan square, re-establishing connections between Paris, Montreuil, and Bagnolet. This strategic entrance to Paris will gain a new dynamic, fostering better integration and accessibility for the surrounding areas.
The Emmaüs recycling center, which has been located at the edge of the Porte de Montreuil roundabout since 2014, will also benefit from the transformation. It will be temporarily relocated during construction and will eventually gain improved comfort and visibility within the new metropolitan square, allowing it to continue its activities of collecting and reselling small appliances, furniture, objects, and clothing.
Challenges for Traders and City Guarantees
Despite the overall positive outlook, the extensive transformation project presents challenges for some local businesses. The plan includes the temporary relocation of a portion of the 330 exhibitors from the Porte de Montreuil flea market for 17 months during the construction period. This decision has been met with concern by some long-standing traders, who have requested guarantees from the City of Paris.
The City of Paris has assured that no trader will be left without a solution. The construction footprint will impact approximately 1,000 m2 on the Montreuil side, near the main entrance to the market, commonly known as the Square des Micocouliers. Discussions are ongoing to mitigate the impact on traders and ensure their continued activity.
