Fire Breaks Out at Lyon Nursing Home: 90 Residents Safely Evacuated

Lyon, March 10 – A fire broke out early yesterday morning, Tuesday, March 10, at the Korian Bellecombe nursing home on Rue Dunoir in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement. The incident prompted a rapid response from approximately 80 firefighters and 28 vehicles, ensuring the safety of all 90 residents.

Swift Response by Emergency Services

The first alarm was raised around 6:00 AM. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to contain the blaze, which originated in the technical room on the -1 level of the establishment. The fire was brought under control relatively quickly, preventing its spread to other parts of the facility.

“The fire started in the technical room on the -1 level of the building,” stated a representative from the fire department. “It was quickly brought under control, and our priority was to ensure the safety of the residents.”

Horizontal Evacuation and No Injuries

Due to the smoke and potential hazards, 90 residents were evacuated horizontally, meaning they were moved to safer areas on the upper floors of the building rather than being transferred outside. This measure ensured their continued care and minimized disruption.

Crucially, no injuries were reported among residents or staff. By 7:30 AM, ventilation operations were underway to clear the smoke from the affected areas. The intervention necessitated the temporary closure of Rue Dunoir and caused diversions for public transport lines in the vicinity.

Korian Group Ensures Continuity of Care

Later in the morning, the Korian Group, which manages the facility, issued a statement confirming that their teams immediately implemented safety procedures. “The continuity of care is assured. The 90 patients of the clinic did not have to be evacuated externally. Breakfasts were served this morning, and lunch is currently being prepared. The technical teams are mobilized to restore all installations during the day,” a Korian representative affirmed.

The incident highlights the importance of robust safety protocols and efficient emergency response in care facilities. The swift actions of both the nursing home staff and the fire department prevented a potentially much more serious outcome.

Investigation into the Cause

An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is expected to be launched. While the fire was contained to the technical room, the full extent of the damage to the facility’s infrastructure is yet to be determined. Technical teams are working to restore all systems and ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the nursing home.

The temporary disruption to local traffic and public transport was a minor inconvenience compared to the successful evacuation and the absence of any casualties. Residents and their families can be reassured by the effective handling of the situation.
