Crisis Meeting Held in Lyon Prefecture Amid Far-Right and Far-Left Tensions
Lyon, March 14 – The prefecture of Rhône and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region convened a crisis meeting on Friday, March 13, to address heightened tensions between far-right and far-left groups in Lyon. The meeting was prompted by the recent death of nationalist activist Quentin Deranque on February 14, which has significantly escalated animosity between the two factions.
The gathering, reported by Lyon Mag, brought together a violent extremism monitoring group. Participants included judicial authorities, internal security forces, and intelligence services, all under the leadership of Prefect Fabienne Buccio. The objective of this meeting was to assess the current threats posed by both groups and to coordinate potential actions should the need arise.
Focus on Dissolved Radical Groups
A key point of discussion during the meeting was the potential reconstitution of previously dissolved radical groups. Particular attention was given to the ‘Jeune Garde,’ a far-right group that was administratively dissolved in 2025. Additionally, the ‘GALE’ (Groupe Antifasciste Lyon et Environs), a far-left movement banned in 2022, was also a significant focus. Recent activity on GALE’s X (formerly Twitter) account has raised concerns about its possible resurgence.
Prefect Fabienne Buccio had previously informed the public prosecutor of Lyon about these social media posts earlier in March, citing the striking similarity of logos and visual identifiers to those of the officially dissolved GALE. This action was taken under Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which mandates officials to report crimes of which they become aware.
Background of Escalating Tensions
The tensions, while not new to Lyon, have intensified considerably since the fatal aggression of Quentin Deranque, a nationalist activist, by far-left militants. This incident on February 14 has brought the long-standing animosity between these groups to a critical point, prompting the prefecture to take proactive measures to monitor and manage the situation.
