Since Wim Wenders’ film introduced the world to ‘son cubano’ over thirty years ago, audiences have fallen in love with a repertoire that continues to evolve and enrich itself. The Buena Vista All Stars aim to revisit the classics, from ‘Chan Chan’ to ‘Dos Gardenias,’ performing them with both traditional authenticity and a contemporary flair.
This transgenerational collective, co-directed by trombonist Demetrio Muñiz (artistic direction and vocals), ‘laúd’ master Barbarito Torres, and trumpeter Manuel Machado-three original members of the Social Club-alongside vocalists Ángel Aguiar and Amanda Gaviria, embodies the soul of Afro-Cuban music that transcends time and continents.
The Getdown: Caribbean Grooves and Infectious Energy
Adding to the vibrant evening, The Getdown will deliver their infectious Caribbean groove. Born on stage, this collective project draws its name from New York musicians’ slang for that climactic moment in a concert where the energy peaks, and both performers and audience ignite in shared pleasure.
The Getdown originated from a ‘carte blanche’ performance by Laurent Coulondre at a Parisian club. Behind his Hammond organ, Coulondre invited long-time collaborators, drummer Arnaud Dolmen and pianist Grégory Privat, to explore their shared musical language: the legacy of Michel Petrucciani and Caribbean music, from the French Antilles to Cuba.
Following their trio debut album, The Getdown expands into a septet for Jazz à Vienne, featuring the fiery Cuban pianist Rolando Luna and the talented Antillean pianist Mario Canonge. An organ, two pianos, and drums are joined by saxophonist Ferdi, Cuban trumpeter Yasek Mansano, and Cuban flutist and singer Melodie Spartacus. The Getdown is a unique formation, a gathering of seven instrumentalists who share a passion for the stage, friendship, and celebration.
