Lyon-Crémieu Tramway Project Continues: A New Stage Reached
Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, April 14, 2026 – The ambitious tramway project aimed at connecting Lyon to Crémieu in Nord-Isère, passing through Meyzieu, is moving forward. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region has officially confirmed the continuation of the project, marking a significant step after the preliminary public consultation phase.
The public consultation, which took place from November 12, 2025, to January 14, 2026, involved nearly 2,000 participants and generated approximately 300 contributions. The Region lauded these exchanges as “rich and constructive,” providing valuable insights into the future long-distance tramway line. While a precise timeline has not yet been announced, the project is described as “highly anticipated and widely supported.”
Eight Stops Between Crémieu and Part-Dieu
The consultation highlighted strong expectations regarding pricing, service offerings, and operational aspects. Discussions were particularly productive concerning the six new stations, in addition to Meyzieu and Crémieu, bringing the total to eight stops. These stations will be strategically located “at the heart of central areas or near major axes,” and will incorporate multimodal services and facilities.
A potential extension towards Part-Dieu was considered, but the Region has not yet brought this option back to the table. Additionally, a cycling and pedestrian route, running mostly parallel to the tramway line, was noted as a “valued component but still requiring clarification.”
“Numerous Commitments” from the Region
Frédéric Aguilera, Vice-President for Transport of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, emphasized the project’s “opportunity” and outlined “numerous commitments.” These include:
- The acquisition of tramway rolling stock and the establishment of a maintenance and storage facility.
- The continuation of necessary studies and investigations for the detailed design of the project.
- The measurement and accompaniment of effects and impacts, particularly environmental, social, and urbanistic.
- The execution of all regulatory procedures, up to the public inquiry.
- The clarification of the calendar and funding.
“With this project, we are choosing a reliable, sustainable infrastructure fully adapted to the development challenges of this territory,” stated Aguilera, underscoring the regional government’s dedication to enhancing public transport infrastructure.
The tramway project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and accessibility for residents between Lyon and Crémieu, addressing growing transportation needs in the region.
