Lyon, France – The Modulo, a prominent barge restaurant situated on the banks of the Rhône, is scheduled for a significant transformation. A new, state-of-the-art floating restaurant and brasserie, described as a “new generation” concept, is expected to open its doors in early June 2026. This development aims to offer a larger, more contemporary, and year-round culinary experience in the heart of Lyon.
A Modern Transformation for a Lyon Landmark
The new establishment, which has been three years in conception and over a year in construction between Belgium and France, will occupy the same prime location. It will feature three levels, boasting a substantial 400 square meters of covered terrace space. This ambitious project seeks to redefine the floating dining experience in Lyon, solidifying its status as the city’s sole floating restaurant, distinct from existing bars, nightclubs, and cruise services.
A “high-end” brasserie will take over the premises, offering a diverse menu from morning to evening, 365 days a year. The operators proudly state that “The Modulo stands out by its size, versatility, and equipment,” emphasizing its design as “a true hybrid living space, at the crossroads of catering, events, and daily uses.”
Enhanced Capacity and Versatile Spaces
The new Modulo will offer an impressive capacity of 400 seated places and up to 500 standing places at maximum capacity. The design incorporates several distinct areas to cater to various needs:
- The Hold (Lower Level): This subterranean area will house modular meeting rooms capable of accommodating up to 60 people, along with storage facilities and customer restrooms. This space is envisioned as a “professional and discreet setting, ideal for seminars and confidential meetings.”
- The Ground Floor (Main Level): Considered the “vibrant heart of the Modulo,” this level will feature a 100-square-meter professional kitchen, a 160-square-meter air-conditioned interior dining area, a spacious covered terrace on the foredeck, and a primary bar.
- The Rooftop: Spanning 300 square meters, this upper deck will provide additional dining and event space, complete with a second bar.
The entire vessel will be equipped with a sound system for events and parties, alongside an integrated wastewater treatment system, underscoring an “ecological commitment.”
Commitment to Sustainability and Community
The incorporation of a wastewater treatment system highlights the project’s dedication to environmental responsibility. This commitment aligns with modern urban development trends that prioritize sustainable practices, especially in sensitive environments like riverbanks. The new Modulo aims to be not just a dining destination but also a responsible member of the Lyon community.
Impact on Lyon’s Culinary and Event Scene
The arrival of this new generation floating restaurant is expected to significantly enhance Lyon’s culinary and event landscape. By offering year-round service and versatile spaces, it aims to attract a wider range of clientele, from casual diners to corporate event organizers. The increased capacity and modern amenities are poised to make the Modulo a premier destination on the Rhône, contributing to the city’s vibrant social and economic life.
Local authorities and residents will be keen to observe the integration of this large-scale project into the existing urban fabric, particularly concerning its environmental impact and its contribution to the overall appeal of the Rhône riverbanks.
The current Modulo barge, a familiar sight on the Rhône, will make way for this ambitious new development, marking a new chapter for floating establishments in Lyon.
